Samsung revs up iTunes rival with new Galaxy S III

Samsung has found yet another way to compete with Apple.

The Galaxy S smartphone maker is officially kicking off its new iTunes rival Music Hub service starting today. Available as an app with the new Galaxy S III phone launching in 28 different countries, Music Hub borrows more than a page or two from iTunes but also adds a paid subscription model.

The service will offer Samsung phone and tablet owners access to 19 million songs, with prices comparable to those found on iTunes, according to Reuters. Users can stream music and download it from the Hub to play it … Read more

Samsung's blue Galaxy S III faces delay due to paint issues

Samsung apparently has difficulties with the color blue.

The "pebble blue" variant of its highly anticipated Galaxy S III smartphone faces delays due to issues with getting the color and its newly invented "hyper-glaze" process, according to several reports. Despite launching today in various markets in Europe and the Middle East, the blue version faces delays of two to three weeks.

Samsung warned that there would only be a short supply of the Galaxy S III due to the complicated hyper-glaze process, Mobile Fun reported on its site.

CNET has contacted Samsung for a comment. We'… Read more

Galaxy S III may arrive in Canada on June 20

American consumers are still waiting for launch details for the Samsung Galaxy S III, but their Canadian neighbors may already have a date to circle on the calendar. A leaked internal screen obtained by MobileSyrup suggests the next Galaxy might enter the atmosphere June 20, just three short weeks from now.

The image, which has been subsequently pulled, shows that four of Canada's major carriers are in line to offer the Galaxy S III. It's worth pointing out, however, that until an official announcement is made, the real date may be different. When you're dealing with a … Read more

Measuring the tech world in 'Kardashians'

Earlier this month, Ethan Zuckerman, who directs the Center for Civic Media at MIT, proposed a new unit of measurement for keeping track of how much attention a person, place, thing, or concept garners in the media. Fittingly, he dubbed the new unit the "Kardashian," presumably because the obvious alternative -- "KFC Double Down Bacon Sandwich" -- is too long.

Here's how Zuckerman explains the Kardashian unit:

Conceptually, the Kardashian is the amount of global attention Kim Kardashian commands across all media over the space of a day. In an ideal, frictionless universe, we'd determine a Kardashian by measuring the percentage of all broadcast media, conversations and thoughts dedicated to Kim Kardashian. In practical terms, we can approximate a Kardashian by using a tool like Google Insights for Search - compare a given search term to Kim Kardashian and you can discover how small a fraction of a Kardashian any given issue or cause merits.

If the U.K. is any indication, then Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III may be even more successful than its predecessors.

Best Android ICS smartphones (roundup)

In my view, smartphones are all about the future, and the best handsets are usually the ones with the freshest, slickest mobile technology. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google's latest and greatest operating system though remains frustratingly out of reach unless you own an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Even so, the number of phones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software is growing. … Read more
