USB keys for 'Year of the Pig'

Items like this appear to leave little doubt that Western capitalistic values have taken firm hold in China.

Lenovo and the Beijing Zhongshi Boda Company have released a pair of gold and silver USB drives made from 30 grams of the precious metals. Spluch says they're being sold as a limited-edition set to commemorate the "Year of the Pig" according to the lunar calendar, inscribed with Chinese proverbs, for $1,280 in Beijing. That's a lot of money, especially in China, but it's still a bargain compared with this single USB key from Japan that … Read more

Why stop at just the gold Razr?

When Crave first mentioned the Dolce & Gabbana Razr, its prices were around $300 or $400, which we thought was plenty considering that it was just a plain old Motorola phone underneath a skin of faux gold. Now, we find out, it was only the beginning.

For the true D&G experience, Neiman Marcus is offering the "Luxury Package" for holiday shopping, which includes a metallic gold leather case, a gold Blutooth headset, a pair of earbuds with gold accents and, of course, a gold-and-silver-tone box. All for only $900.

But for the thriftier among us, the … Read more

Gold-plated Hummer on parade

If phones, cameras, printers and anything else can be dipped in gold, why not cars?

A company called RealGold apparently will gold-plate your grille (the one on your car, not your teeth) or any other part of your vehicle as long as the price is right. Some of its work was featured at this year's Bucharest Luxury Show, where the Hummer pictured here was on blinding display with its 24k-plated parts. As BornRich says, it would look fetching in the garage next to your chrome-covered BMW and diamond-encrusted Mercedes.

If it's gold, we've got it covered

We've been accused of having a gold fetish, something that we resoundingly deny. It's mere coincidence that we've recently had occasion to mention gold phones, cameras, watches, printers, USB keys and, most recently, styluses (styli?).

Crave covers items made with all minerals, precious or otherwise. So it's simply out of obligation that we must now write about Samsung's special auction to mark the millionth sale of its "Z5" MP3 player. Up for sale: 10 of the players with 18k gold casings, each with a signature of designer Paul Mercer (of iPod fame) etched … Read more

18k stylus goes for the gold

It's a problem that so many people must face these days: what kind of stylus to use with your Swarovski crystal-encrusted DS Lite. Not just any stylus will do, of course, especially when it's being used with an item reportedly designed by Paris Hilton.

Luxurylaunches says this Nintendo DS Lite gold stylus "gives the feel and performance of the most luxurious stylus on the market in the present day. And it's apparently real 18 carat, not some cheesy plated product, and can work with any PDA. That means more bang for your buck (if you can … Read more

Nokia joins the gold rush, in 24k

Designing cell phones isn't what it once was. Where companies used to compete only with other phone makers, they must now do battle with multimedia players, GPS systems, cameras, PDAs and who knows what else. And on top of all that, they must deal with the fashion designers who have fallen in love with gold handsets.

Nokia is the latest to join the gold rush with the "Diamond Edition" of its 8800 Sirocco, a luxury version from Germany's Sanyedesign that adds a 24k gold case to its 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and 100MB built-in memory.

24k printer to make your work golden

It happens all the time: You take some photos with your gold camera, then transfer the files to your gold USB drive, but where do you make the prints? Hewlett-Packard has the obvious answer, with its 24-carat gold HP Laserjet printer.

The working 24k prototype is being auctioned in Japan, starting at a paltry $299, according to Engadget. You might even be able to call in the winning bid on your gold cell phone.

18k camera salutes bad taste

What is it about anniversaries that makes companies lose all sense of good taste? (If they had any to begin with, that is.) Throw in the term "limited edition" and things are certain to get ugly in a hurry.

Case in point: Pentax's "Asahi LX Gold," to celebrate its 60th year in business. But it didn't stop at the camera's 18k casing--Pentax had to add crocodile-print leather as well, presumably because it needed that extra something to finish it off. Luxist says the camera isn't just all about show and features the &… Read more

A phone from Russia, with love

Some of the world's most inspired designs are coming from post-Cold War Russia, and this stunning new phone is no exception. The handset, which Gizmodo reports is made of gold and African Blackwood, is a reminder that the Russians never lost their historical sense of czarist luxury.

Little is known about the mobile phone's manufacturer (Gresso), its price or its functionality, other than claims that it is "well equipped technically," according to Gizmodo, and that no two handsets are exactly the same. But with a phone this gorgeous, we frankly don't care. And apparently others … Read more
