Weapon of mass consumption: the beer-launching fridge

Robotic Beer Launching Refrigerator - The best bloopers are a click away

If you're too lazy to drive your beer keg around, then this might be the solution you've been dreaming of: the beer-launching fridge. The fantasy of frat houses worldwide, the BLF can be loaded with up to 10 cans, which can be fired out at will to those installed on the couch on the other side of the room.

Launch angle and firing are controlled remotely using a keyless vehicle entry system: pressing the Unlock starts the catapult arm rotating to the desired angle, pressing it … Read more

Data made fun with Swivel

Swivel is a data visualization service that lets you add your own data sets or search from a large pool of public submissions. If this sounds boring, it shouldn't. It's actually kind of fun and very similar to browsing Flickr. Data is presented in several ways, from pie charts to bar graphs to scatter plots. You can also easily tab over in any graphical chart representation to get the raw chart numbers. Where was this when I was in college?

Most of the content on Swivel is fairly bland, such as the prime loan rates for banks, but … Read more

Das ist ein Wunderbar!

(NOTE: Yes, I am aware that this post's headline probably makes no sense.)

By now, it's clear that "user-generated content" is going to be one of the big tech buzz-phrases of 2006. Most of the time, it refers to the antics of AJAX-filled Web apps with cutesy names and cutesier logos, or to grainy YouTube videos of kids breaking TV screens with Wiimotes. But clearly, user-generated content goes beyond the series of tubes and into other niches of 21st-century lifestyle. Boozing, for example. A while ago, we wrote about the WinePod, which lets oenophiles with a … Read more

Digg founder dishes iPhone specs

Kevin Rose might be getting a phone call from Steve Jobs today.

On the latest espisode of his weekly Diggnation podcast with Alex Albrecht, Rose claimed--in between swigs of what appears to be a 24-ounce bottle of the Crave-approved Racer 5 IPA from Bear Republic--to have the dirt on Apple's long-rumored iPhone combination cell phone/iPod device. There's no shortage of blogs and Apple watchers predicting the imminent arrival of the iPhone, but MacRumors.com notes that Rose accurately predicted the news from last January's Macworld and also called the iPod Nano, so we're willing to … Read more

Finally, a combo fridge-bar

Enough already with all these designer refrigerators in those frou-frou colors. They may look nice and all, but sometimes we need an appliance that just gets the job done. And nothing can do that better than a fridge with a built-in bar, as seen on Pocket-lint. This is particularly handy for those occasions when every second counts, including the precious time wasted opening and closing the refrigerator door. You'll never miss another Superbowl commercial again--especially if you get one of these to go with it.

'Smart Table' keeps your glass full

Forty years ago, this would have been the kind of product exhibited in the home of the future at Disneyland's Tomorrowland, alongside voice-activated ovens and the first picture phones. The circular "Smart Table" that we spotted on Slashgear has a built-in refrigerator that magically rises from the center on demand. A guest needs another beer? Not a problem. Just hit the remote control to execute your duties as the perfect host, without ever leaving your seat. It's not quite the same as a ride on Space Mountain, but we'll take it--shaken, not stirred.

Firebox.com, a less geeky ThinkGeek

When I think about holiday shopping for my gadget-obsessed friends, I normally point my mouse right to ThinkGeek, the perennial mainstay of online nerd retail. Problem is, sometimes ThinkGeek's selection of lightsabers and binary blankets is a little too geeky. That's why I'm pumped about Firebox, a U.K. site that just launched a stateside version. It's got plenty of ThinkGeek-ish toys, but the slant is a little less "World of Warcraft" and a little more "Old School." If you take a look at their product selection--high-speed coffee makers, pumpkin-carving drills, … Read more

Top five uses for a rocket-powered pickup truck

Hip Tech Blog is showcasing a particularly interesting exhibition from last week's X Prize Cup in New Mexico: a 2,750-pound thrust nitrous oxide rocket that fits neatly in the bed of a pickup truck. Here at Crave, we like versatile technology, and wow, this truck rocket really takes the cake. Imagine the possibilities!

1. Clearly, now you can catch up with that elusive deer. Unfortunately, since the rocket takes up the entire truck bed, you'll have to find somewhere else to put the animal when you drive it to the taxidermist's. And a rocket can't … Read more

A surefire way to make Segways sell

Fratboy photo repository CollegeHumor generally isn't the hottest destination for awesome gadget prototypes, unless you're looking for creatively constructed contraptions designed for the inhalation of various illicit substances. The "Kegway," however, caught my eye. Sure, it's purely a figment of Photoshop, and it would probably break several laws of physics to actually attach a keg onto the front of a Segway (they fall over easily enough as it is), but wouldn't this be an awesome new way to get busted for DUI?

I think introducing a "Kegway" model would solve each and … Read more
