Intel's Windows 8 tablet: Checklist goes public

Intel is offering more specifics on the features of future Windows 8 tablet at a conference in Beijing. It's a laudable goal, but can Intel make it happen this year?

Underneath the glass will be beat an Atom Z2760 "Clover Trail" chip: dual-core capable with "burst mode" (for quick bursts of performance when needed) and Hyperthreading -- the latter allows a dual-core chip to behave in quad-core-like fashion in some cases. … Read more

Recall: Lenovo calls back two ThinkCentre models on fire risk

You can read Lenovo's recall information page for all the details of the recall. A tool on the page lets you plug in your machine code and serial number to find out if you have an affected unit. The M90z is a different unit than the M91z we reviewed in October 2011.

Lenovo markets the ThinkCentre line to business customers, although it is available for anyone to purchase. Lenovo says it sold the at-risk systems between May 2010 and January 2012.

If you are at risk for a flaming all-in-one, Lenovo advises you to immediately unplug your desktop. Once … Read more

As ultrabook makers seek stronger sales, some opt for low cost

Ultrabook suppliers are still dealing with pesky market and profitability issues, according to a CNET source and two reports. And some will turn to low-cost designs as a result.

"The ultrabook adoption during the holiday season was ugly," an industry source, who speaks to ultrabook suppliers, told CNET. That source was speaking about sales for one particular ultrabook vendor.

The market for all ultrabook suppliers, however, is still challenging. "You've got a down market on the eve of a new operating system (Windows 8) at a price point that's fairly robust (high)," said the … Read more

Sony struggles to meet demand for popular NEX lens

Those looking to buy the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T E 24mm F1.8 ZA lens may have a hard time finding it for sale anytime soon.

In an announcement today, the Japanese company informed consumers that it cannot keep up with demand for the popular E-mount lens, which starts at around $999. The shortage situation is on the path to a resolution, as the Sony notice says that "we are working diligently in order to meet the needs of customers as much as possible."

Why is this lens so popular? "It's fast (wide aperture), sharp, and bright with nice bokeh, plus it has a good feel and comfortable manual focusing," says CNET Senior Editor Lori Grunin. Read her review of the most current cameras that use the lens, the Sony NEX-7 or NEX-5N, at CNET Reviews. … Read more

Ultrabooks are underpricing Apple at retail--and they'd better

Ultrabooks from Toshiba, Acer, and Samsung remain at relatively low prices at major retailers like Best Buy compared to analogous offerings from Apple.

Prices for the 13-inch Toshiba Portege (Z835-P330) and 13-inch Acer Aspire S3 (S3-951-6646) have stayed at $799 for many weeks since they were announced last fall. Currently, both are listed at Best Buy for $799.99.

Comparable 13-inch MacBook Air laptops from Apple are typically priced a few hundred dollars more.

Apple is an important benchmark because the ultrabook category was created, in part, to compete with the increasingly popular MacBook Air. And an analyst said this weekRead more

End of an era: NASA shuts down its last mainframe

There was a time when IBM's mainframes were cutting-edge machines for scientific and engineering calculations.

Those days began in the 1960s, when IBM's System 360 rewrote the rules of computing and before humans walked on the moon. Big Blue long since has moved its high-performance technical computing effort toward its high-end Blue Gene systems and more conventional Linux servers using Intel and AMD x86 chips and Unix servers with its own Power processor. IBM's System Z mainframe line is now geared for commercial customers who are willing to pay a premium for reliability and high performance for … Read more

No potty-mouth lyrics for iTunes Match

I've got 99 problems but a glitch ain't one.

Right now, that's more than Apple can say. The company is trying to fix a glitch that has resulted in iTunes Match filtering out explicit lyrics from what appears to be a small number of rap songs, according to the blog Cult of Mac.

Instead of hearing Kanye West's "Power" or Jay-Z's "Can I Live" the way they were originally recorded, the iTunes Match streaming service will only deliver profanity-free sanitized versions.

While parents might appreciate this kind of malfunction, there are … Read more
