The top 10 spacecraft

In The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams wrote, "Space is big--really big--you just won't believe how vastly, hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. You may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

Space's roominess is good news for us rapidly multiplying humans, because it seems logical that we should one day want to expand into our solar system--and possibly further. But because of our frail and squishy bodies we need some heavyweight protection to leave the cozy home comforts of our bijou atmosphere, … Read more

Photobucket glitch sends some users to another site

Some Photobucket users trying to access the site on Tuesday afternoon were sent to an incorrect page as a result of an error in the site's DNS hosting services, according to an e-mail from the Photobucket support team.

The error was fixed within an hour, but some users were not expected to regain access to the site for a few hours as the fix was rolled out.

"It is important to note that only a portion of Photobucket users encountered the problem and that no Photobucket content, password information or other personal information was affected by the redirect,&… Read more

Are you a perpetrator of workplace printer abuse?

According to a new survey released today, about 60 percent of the Canadian workforce is making personal use of their office printer.

The survey, conducted by Angus Reid Strategies for Samsung Electronics revealed that a large majority of Canadians who work in offices with high volume laser printers aren't using them for memos and work-related e-mails, but rather for personal letters, color photos, and even *gasp* resumes! The study breaks down the percentage of people that print out random documents:

I think it's safe to assume that the reason for all this work-printer abuse is because of the … Read more

Polaroid debuts pocket-size photo printer

Polaroid, the company that brought the world the iconic snap-and-print camera, is ready to introduce a new instant-photo product fit for the Digital Age. The PoGo, a mobile, inkless printer with a cute name, is small enough to fit in a pocket and prints wallet-size pictures that can be turned into stickers.

The company--which continues its attempt to transition from an analog past to a digital future--hopes the Polaroid-on-the-go will revolutionize instant photo printing.

Polaroid showed the little 8-ounce PoGo to CNET News.com on Tuesday. The product receives images via Bluetooth from a camera cell phone or through a … Read more

HP rolls out three new wallet-friendly printers for the home

Yesterday I posted about the Epson Stylus NX400, a printer geared toward people with a limited budget. Well, it looks like HP is also looking to ramp up their low-cost printer line--today, they released three printers designed to increase efficiency in the home. Let's take a look:

Let's start with the HP Photosmart C4480, an All-in-One printer, scanner, and copier for $99. This one looks like it will be a direct competitor to the aforementioned Epson Stylus NX400. Both have multifunctionality and an LCD screen, but the HP is only 1.5 inches and fixed in place, while … Read more

Epson's newest $100 multifunction printer

We're excited about Epson's newest multifunction printer, the Stylus NX400. The all-in-one printer, copier, and scanner is outfitted in a glossy black finish and uses Epson's DURABrite Ultra ink to produce photos that can reportedly last up to six times longer than the average printer using plain paper.

Under the hood, you'll find Epson's MicroPiezo DX3 print nozzle head that uses variable ink droplet sizes from 4 picoliters and up, which translates to finer detail in the quality of your photos. The printer also has a 2.5 inch tilt LCD screen, memory card slots, … Read more

Facebook photos make their way to the shelf

It's been noted many times that digital photo frames--among the most overproduced items in the gadget world--are perennially searching for new ways to differentiate themselves from the ever-growing pack. Some have included Webcams, combined with land lines to provide photo IDs, or have doubled as secondary computer displays.

eStarling, for its part, has taken a different tack: Rather than contantly updating its hardware, it adds new feeds to its 8-inch Wi-Fi frame. Already able to get streams from online photo services such as Flickr or Photobucket, the wireless frame has now added Facebook to its networked family.

Once hooked … Read more

HP's newest multifunction printer includes a built-in DVD drive

The HP Photosmart C8180 isn't cheap, so we wouldn't recommend you throwing down $400 for this multifunction unless you're an amateur photographer who needs a top-notch printer and won't mind waiting more than a minute for each photo.

We just finished testing the C8180 (full review), and we were impressed by its built-in LightScribe drive. LightScribe is a direct disc-labeling system that uses lasers to burn an image directly onto the disc. The LightScribe system is meant to eliminate the smudges and peeling that inevitably happens with sticker labels, and the fact that Hewlett-Packard decided to … Read more

Digital frame doubles as a secondary display

Call us eternal optimists, but perhaps companies are starting to figure out that digital photo frames are among the most use-challenged inventions of the digital age. In recent months manufacturers seem to have begun trying to add functions that might actually make them worthwhile, whether they've built in a Webcam or used them for something like the "PhotoPhone," which displays a picture of the person who's calling.

Asus too seems to understand the concept, as it has introduced a 7-inch LCD frame with a "sub-display" feature that can turn it into a secondary screen … Read more
