Apple's App Rejections Get Curiouser

Apple's App Store rejections are making less and less sense. The latest victim, Cast Catcher, is a streaming Internet radio application in the same vein as AOL Radio and Pandora--both of which have been available through the App Store almost since its inception.

CastCatcher 1.3 was rejected, according to an Apple statement posted by return7 , because:

"CastCatcher Internet Radio cannot be posted to the App Store because it is transferring excessive volumes of data over the cellular network, which as outlined in the iPhone SDK Agreement section 3.3.15, is prohibited"

This despite the similarity … Read more

Apple rejects update to CastCatcher iPhone app

Updated 5:15pm with comment from Return7.

The fourth time was definitely not the charm for the developers behind the CastCatcher streaming radio application for the iPhone.

Apple rejected CastCatcher 1.3 from the App Store on Monday, according to Return7 developer Amro Mousa. The reason? "CastCatcher Internet Radio cannot be posted to the App Store because it is transferring excessive volumes of data over the cellular network, which as outlined in the iPhone SDK Agreement section 3.3.15, is prohibited."

If that's Apple's policy regarding streaming radio applications, Mousa is a little puzzled, because … Read more

Ballmer: No on WebKit, yes on app store

During a trip Down Under, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has had a lot to say. This week in Sydney, Australia, he stated that he isn't interested in wooing Yahoo anymore, he doesn't understand how Google plans to profit from Android, and he has confidence in President-elect Barack Obama's leadership.

And while the expressive executive on Friday also said Microsoft "may look into" using WebKit, the open-source browser-rendering technology used by Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers, he mostly rejected that idea, according to a Computerworld report. Instead, he said the two prominent Microsoft … Read more

My favorite iPhone brainteasers

I'll admit that I'm more into puzzles and brain games than I am into, say, poker. Don't get me wrong. iPhone poker is cool, but the word game Wurdle is the one I can't put down as I nearly miss my bus stop.

In Wurdle ($1.99), you drag your finger in any direction over adjacent letters in a grid to form as many words as you can before time runs out. The grid size, word length, game duration, dictionary, and even tile color are all customizable. Wurdle keeps track of high scores and the longest … Read more

Apple added 8,000 retail employees in fiscal 2008

Apple's retail operation doubled in size during 2008.

Todd Bishop's TechFlash noted a paragraph in Apple's 10-K annual filing released Wednesday that the company now employs 32,000 people on a full-time basis, up from 21,600 at this time last year. Almost 16,000 of those people work in Apple's retail segment, which now has 247 stores.

In last year's annual report, Apple said it had almost 8,000 people working in the retail group, which comprised 197 stores. During fiscal 2008, or the period ended in September, the retail segment accounted for $6.… Read more

Video: Nintendo DSi in action

Shortly after rumors began to surface about a Nintendo DS successor, the company officially announced that the next Nintendo handheld would be called the DSi and will include two bigger screens, two cameras, and would be 12 percent slimmer than the DS lite (at the expense of the Game Boy Advance slot). But perhaps what's most exciting about the DSi is the addition of a DS Store, where you'll be able to download games directly to the device (which will also have an SD slot). For a First Look at the new DSi and its store, watch the … Read more

iPhone gets 'new', new music

OurStage, a service that allows you to discover new, alternative, and underground music, has launched a version of its service for the iPhone. OurStage Radio for the iPhone can be found now at the App Store for free.

We've covered OurStage before and so far, the iPhone app just seems like a mobile version of its site/service.

Users are able to select different music, categorized in a surprising number of genres, like hip-hop, alternative hip-hop, and rap. There's also a Guitar Solo genre that actually has a huge number of artists available. Once you've listened, you'… Read more

Ford Flex Photo Lab iPhone app

It seems that more and more automakers are jumping on this iPhone app bandwagon. First it was Audi, with its driving game. Then Mercedes-Benz launched an iPhone optimized Web site featuring video. Now, it's Ford's turn to throw its hat into the iPhone arena. Where the previous two examples were directly related to the cars and car culture, Ford has chosen to release a free photo editor. What?

The Ford Flex Photo Lab--try saying that five times fast--is essentially a collection of six photo filters that allow iPhone users to fix up or trick out their pictures. What … Read more

Elitist jerks and nubs alike get their iPhone chess fix

If you're interested in a chess game for the iPhone or iPod Touch, look no further than the App Store. I just searched for the keyword "chess" and found more than 10 entries, most of which were actually chess games.

With so many chess games to choose from, why would a developer want to release another into such a crowded market? Well, obviously they think they can do chess better than the next guy.

99Games must be pretty confident in its product, as it's going one step further. On Wednesday, it announced the availability of two … Read more
