The Santa Rosa shuffle

Every major PC manufacturer is announcing a lineup of new laptops this morning. These systems are all part of Intel's new Santa Rosa platform, which to the laptop-buying public means they'll have either a Centrino Pro or Centrino Duo sticker on them somewhere.

Our colleague Michelle Thatcher will go into further detail on the Santa Rosa specs later today, but for the most part, it involves having one of several new mobile Intel CPUs (From the T7000-series), support for Wireless N networking, Intel's new 965 chipset, and some additional onboard memory--Intel calls it Turbo Memory--for faster booting. … Read more

Santa Rosa laptop leaks keep on coming

Details on pretty much every high-profile laptop featuring Intel's equally high-profile new Santa Rosa platform (otherwise known as Centrino Pro or Centrino Duo) are now freely available somewhere or other on this virtual playground we call the Internet.

Originally, dozens of new systems were going to be announced the morning of May 9. While those announcements, and their requisite press releases, will still happen, just about every last cat is already out of the bag.

We previously clued you into leaks about systems from HP, Sony, and Lenovo, and over the last few days a new flood of information … Read more

Dell launches Spanish-language corporate blog

Dell chairman and CEO Michael Dell announced Tuesday at the Entrepreneur Endeavor Summit that the company has launched DellenDirecto.com, a Spanish-language blog geared toward communicating with its customer base and other stakeholders. Dell considers it to be an extension of Direct2Dell, its English-language corporate blog that it has operated since July 2006. In March, Dell launched a Chinese version of Direct2Dell.

On the new blog, employees from the company's management, customer care, personnel, and engineering divisions will "listen to customers? feedback, discuss IT trends, and blog about technology topics," according to a statement released Tuesday. Readers … Read more

Dell outlines turnaround plans for employees

Michael Dell's got his new executive team fully in place, and they intend to turn things around by shoring up the core businesses and reaching customers in new ways.

The Wall Street Journal (subcription required) reported Friday on a memo sent to Dell employees Wednesday informing them of the results of a recent executive meeting of the minds. A Dell spokesman confirmed the memo was genuine.

Among other things, the memo vows that Dell is going to improve efficiency and look at new distribution strategies, which could involve the company altering its fundamental direct model.

"The Direct Model … Read more

Dell spins into solid state drives

If there's one buzz topic that has laptop fans excited right now, it's the transition from traditional platter-based hard drives to solid state drives (like the one in your iPod Nano). These drives, like that flash memory stick hanging off your keychain, have no moving parts, give off less heat, and require less power to run--all good things if you're packing a few thousand dollars worth of battery-powered technology into your carry on bag.

The ultramobile Latitude D420 and semi-rugged D620 ATG laptops are the first systems in the Dell line to get these 32GB 1.8-inch … Read more

Dell tablet rumors heat up again

Oh, Rumor Mill. We've been burned by you before, and yet we always fly back, like moths to a flame. The spark this time: James Kendrick at gadget blog jkOnTheRun posted details of a possible Dell tablet PC to be released this fall. The source? A reader who claims to have talked to Dell reps at two different events. According to this reader, the tablet will be based on the existing Latitude D420 laptop and will not include a touch screen (you'll have to use a stylus, not your finger, to navigate menus). As Kendrick points out, a … Read more

Dell: Goodbye PDAs, hello smart phones?

Well, well, isn't this interesting? There's a report out of DigiTimes that Quanta Computer, a Taiwanese-based laptop and hardware manufacturer, is working on a "PDA handset" for Dell with an expected launch date of Q4 2007. Code named Fly, the project is reported to be a Windows Mobile 6 smart phone that will feature a QWERTY keyboard and HSDPA support. The news comes a week after Dell announced it would be discontinuing its Axim line of PDAs. The move would make sense; smart phone sales continue to climb and overshadow standalone PDAs. Plus, let's not … Read more

Dell rolls out massive laptop hard drives

Laptops are all about cramming the most stuff into the least amount of space, so the Interwebs are rightfully buzzing about the latest offerings found in the Dell and Alienware online system configurators.

With no prerelease hype, you can now order an Alienware m9700or Dell XPS M2010 with a gigantic 250GB 2.5-inch hard drive (running at 5,400rpm)--or even pair two drives up for half a terabyte of ripped DVDs data storage.

That's better than the 160GB drives most laptops topped out at until now, but what's all that extra capacity going to cost you? For … Read more

Dell axes Axim

Dell has stopped selling its Axim line of handhelds and is not planning a new product in the category.

"The Axim X51 family is no longer being offered, and we have no plans for a follow-on product at this time," Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said in an e-mail. Camden noted that the company does sell handhelds from other makers on its Web site, including GPS devices and smart phones.

Dell introduced its first Axim Pocket PC in 2002, helping to bring lower prices to a market in which customers had grown used to spending several hundred dollars. Over … Read more

Vista driver issues keep Dell Blu-Ray laptop on WinXP

Dell's XPS M1710 notebook with a Blu-Ray disc player is stuck on Windows XP until driver issues can be worked out, according to a Dell representative.

In December, Dell unveiled the flashy Blu-Ray-equipped M1710 as part of its high-end XPS lineup, designed to cater to gamers, digital enthusiasts, and those who believe Dell has no style. This laptop comes with all the bells and whistles available on laptops these days, including a 17-inch UXGA display, a powerful graphics card from Nvidia, and a Blu-Ray DVD burner for watching and creating high-definition video.

But you can't get it with … Read more
