Got $200? Blow it all on a USB cable

Nokia's Vertu brand has already staked its claim as a luxury handset maker. Now it's getting into the lucrative accessory market with a $190 USB cable.

I know I shouldn't be so surprised. That's a drop in the bucket compared with the $20,000 price tag for Vertu's Year of the Dragon phone. Even the Vertu wall charger costs $85.

For $190, the Vertu USB cable should be capable of transferring data at warp speeds, giving excellent stock tips, and washing your dog. Alas, it's just a USB 2.0 cable and doesn't appear to have any superpowers.… Read more

Get an 8GB Kingston Mini Fun flash drive for $7.95

OK, time to test the new-and-improved Cheapskate newsletter system, which shoots out the e-mail shortly after my post goes live.

That's key today, as we're looking at an item that's likely to sell out fast.

While supplies last, Buy.com has the Kingston 8GB DataTraveler Mini Fun flash drive for $7.95 shipped.

Update: Sure enough, it sold out. But as at least one helpful commenter pointed out, Newegg continues to offer the 8GB DataTraveler 108 drive for $7.99 shipped. Excellent alternative.

(In case of sellout, here's a preemptive backup: B&H Photo … Read more

Update: Sold out, but this seller has the same thing for $2.99 shipped.

Warpia intros USB-based wireless display videoconferencing

Warpia announced today another wireless display product, the ConnectHD (model SWP400VC).

Unlike existing wireless display standards, such as Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) or WHDI from Amimon, which support only audio and video, ConnectHD can also handle videoconferencing and can work with any computer that has a USB 2.0 (or later) port.

The device has two separate parts. One is a compact USB adapter, about the size of a cellular USB modem, to be connected to a computer. The other is a larger receiver with a built-in wide-angle, 720p HD camera, and an HMDI connector to be connected to a large display, such as an HDTV.

Warpia says that the package also includes a multidirectional microphone and can be used for making video calls, playing back digital content, and displaying video games on an HDTV. It basically mirrors everything you see on a computer's screen on the big TV.

The ConnectHD supports HD up to 1080p and can handle a wireless distance between the computer and the big screen of up to 30 feet. The device uses the wireless USB 1.0 standard and supports Windows computers only.

Warpia says that it will be demoing the ConnectHD at CES 2012. The ConnectHD is available now, costing about $200.… Read more

Pioneer intros smallest, lightest Blu-ray burner

Pioneer's new BDR-XD04J contains a mind-numbing array of disc burning and playback options that should cover you for the next several years.

Perhaps the biggest highlight is support for BDXL BD-R discs, which means you can burn those fancy triple-layer 100GB and quad-layer 128GB Blu-ray discs in a tiny package. This is supposed to be the world's smallest BDXL-compatible portable drive. … Read more

USB 3.0 that much closer to standard on Intel PCs

USB 3.0 has gotten the green light for becoming a standard offering on Intel-based Windows PCs next year.

The USB Implementers Forum announced this week that the upcoming "Ivy Bridge" 7 Series Chipset and other Intel chipsets have achieved USB 3.0 certification. Chipsets are support silicon that work in tandem with the main processor.

USB 3.0, aka SuperSpeed USB, delivers up to 10 times the data transfer rate of USB 2.0, as well as improved power efficiency.

Intel's Ivy Bridge silicon, due to ship in Windows PCs in the April-June time frame, will … Read more

Home cloud: Hands-on with the new Pogoplug Series 4

Sick of living in the cloud?

The new Pogoplug Series 4 is a device that looks to take the best of cloud computing and home network-attached storage and combine the two into a seamless experience. Available today, it certainly seems like a perfectly timed idea in the wake of seemingly daily frustrations with services like Apple's own iCloud and iTunes Match.

Maybe the fourth time's a charm: I've reviewed multiple Pogoplugs before, but none of them came close to what this new version offers. The Pogoplug is a NAS drive without the complications, and it's finally hit a sweet spot for price, size, and feature set. The newly released Pogoplug Series 4 is a latecomer to the holiday shopping season, but if you're getting fed up with iCloud and what other cloud services have to offer, then this $99 device might be what you're looking for.… Read more

Improve the sound of your iPhone/iPod with the NuForce iDo

NuForce is a high-end company that makes an unusually wide range of products, from the tiny uDAC-2 portable headphone amp ($129) all the way up to the Reference 18 power amplifiers ($6,600 for a stereo pair). NuForce is based in Milpitas, Calif.

Today we'll be looking at the Icon iDo, a dedicated USB digital-to-analog converter/headphone amplifier designed to work with iPods, iPhones, and iPads, which cannot be used as a USB/DAC with computers. The iDo is awfully little, it's just 6 by 4.5 by 1 inches, and it shares its all-metal chassis with NuForce'… Read more

List surfaces of Intel chips destined for ultrabooks, MacBooks

Don't run out and buy that new ultrabook or MacBook yet. Not until you look at the deets on Next-gen Intel mobile processors, which were just leaked.

Dubbed Ivy Bridge, these chips are due in the April-May time frame and pack Intel's first 3D transistors built on its world-leading 22-nanometer process technology.

By, let's say, the end of 2012 virtually all new MacBooks and ultrabooks will house Ivy Bridge processors. Not to mention the larger Windows (by then, let's hope that's Windows 8) mainstream and gaming laptop varieties.

A couple of model numbers of interest … Read more
