Send pics using Twitter's official picture service

Twitter recently started allowing people to send pictures from Twitter.com, using Twitter's own photo-sharing platform. Until now, only those who are using Apple's iOS 5 beta had access to sending pictures via the new service.

It's dead simple to send a picture on Twitter, but it can easily be overlooked if you aren't sure where to look for it.

New Twitter features focus on you, those you follow

Twitter is rolling out a couple of new features that should help you find more revelant tweets, especially those that involve you.

As of yesterday, the microblogging site is replacing the familiar Mentions tab with a new tab that displays your username, according to the company's official blog. You'll also see tweets directed to you and which tweets are popular among the … Read more

Tweet Hunt shooting app takes aim at Twitter

The rise of Twitter has been a revelation for some people and an annoyance for others. Now you can take out your ire at inane Twitter topics with Tweet Hunt for iPhone and iPad.

Tweet Hunt is a shooting gallery app that involves using a slingshot to aim at and bean flying birds that look like Angry Birds' cousins. Each bird represents a real tweet that someone thought was important enough to share with the world.

Tweet Hunt comes in two flavors, Classic (free) and Celebirdies (99 cents). Classic lets you blast away at trending topics like "#whyareyou" and "justin won," a reference to the Bieber's recent Teen Choice award. Topics changes as Twitter trends change.

The Tweet Hunt Celebirdies edition adds an extra layer of satisfaction when you take on famous Twitter users like Snooki and Charlie Sheen. Earning points allows you to unlock more celebrities.

There's even a cute fail whale floating around in the background. If you're skilled enough to hit it, you can do some major damage to the tweeting birds.… Read more

HootSuite, TweetDeck, or Seesmic?

For Android users, there are basically three apps to choose from when it comes to one-stop social networking: HootSuite, TweetDeck, and Seesmic. They're all great hubs for your social network updates, and they're all really good at shortening links, geotagging, and adding pictures to your posts. For the most part, the three of them do the basics very well, which makes it hard to decide which to use. So, we're taking a look at some of the nuances that set the three of them apart.

First up is HootSuite, which requires you to set up a HootSuite … Read more

How to tweet like a man

Apparently, what you tweet can say a lot about who you are. It's an evolving truism that even socio-linguists are hip to. Just last month, a study was presented at a linguistics conference in Scotland that looked at possible connections between what people tweet and their gender.

The study gives word nerds like me the opportunity for all kinds of fun. Before getting down to it, check out the list of the most gender-skewed words from the study. These are the words that were determined to be the most predictive of a Tweeter's gender:

Using the above chart, the most feminine tweet possible would be something like:

omg girl! totally cute etsy dress shopping, yay! hubby miss birthday, soo sad-sigh- hate husband today, baby miss yummy dinner tomorrow lol

See? You'd never guess that Tweet was composed by a married man who never forgets his wife's birthday, has a significant respect for the treasure trove that is crafts site Etsy, and isn't afraid to admit it to the world.

Now, looking at the more ludicrous part of the chart, the most masculine tweet possible would read more like:

Googled google, Google results missing http. Mayb need http when use http://google.com? No answer at Google or http://google.com Google fail

Let's hope we're more interesting in face-to-face conversation than we are in this most algorithmically gender-predictive tweet, guys. If not, it might explain why the ladies are spending more time tweeting about Etsy and chocolate and hair than us.… Read more

Tweetdeck is your social dashboard

Tweetdeck, now owned by Twitter, gives you power over your Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Google Buzz accounts, all from a single application window. It presents each of your feeds as customizable columns, and allows you to easily swipe left or right between them.

Thanks to Tweetdeck's slick, dark interface and adjustable text, keeping up with your social networks from your Android device is easy on the eyes. Your feed columns are adjustable, and updates are even color coded so you can quickly distinguish between Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Buzz posts. The Home column shows all of your feeds aggregated … Read more

Power up your social networking

HootSuite for Android lets you sign in to your Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare accounts from a single application window. While the app may not be versatile enough for the most active social media personalities, it is a convenient option for frequent users of these three social networks.

The first thing you should know about HootSuite for Android is that it's nowhere near as powerful as its browser-based sibling. While the desktop version lets you sign in to and post from no fewer than nine different networks, the Android app is limited to the three mentioned above. That said, the … Read more

Twitter starts injecting paid tweets into the stream

Twitter today stepped up its advertising efforts with a new program that puts promoted tweets right in front of where users are likely to be looking.

The new system takes promoted tweets--which are paid marketing messages from Twitter's business partners--and puts them up near the top of users' timelines, where they'd typically find the latest updates from accounts of those they're following. Twitter says users will only see these tweets once, and only if they're following that brand or organization. The company has also included a way to dismiss these from the stream, something that can'… Read more

Women's World Cup helps Twitter reach milestone

The Women's World Cup final was a major event on Twitter yesterday.

At the end of the soccer final between the U.S. and Japan, 7,196 tweets were sent out each second, Twitter announced on its official account yesterday. That figure helped set a new record for tweets per second. The game between Paraguay and Brazil led to a peak of 7,166 tweets per second, catapulting it to the second spot.

That spike in traffic is significant. When President Obama announced the death of Osama Bin Laden earlier this year, Twitter revealed that more than 4,000 tweets were sent out each second. The 2010 NBA finals saw 3,085 tweets per second, and Japan's World Cup victory over Denmark last year caused a spike of 3,283 tweets per second. During the 2011 Super Bowl, Twitter saw 4,064 tweets hit its service every second.

However, until yesterday, the top tally went to Japan's ringing in of the new year, when 6,939 tweets were sent out each second.

Earlier this month, Twitter announced that its users are now sending out 200 million tweets each day, up significantly from the 2 million they tweeted in January 2009 and 65 million they offered up a year ago.… Read more
