NFL demos live 3D broadcasts

If you thought that watching football in high definition seemed more realistic, just wait until you can view a game in 3D.

Next week the National Football League is broadcasting live in 3D a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders to theaters in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. The event, to be held December 4, is a demonstration to show how the technology can be used to provide a more realistic experience in a theater or in the home.

The NFL has invited representatives from consumer electronics companies to view the event in an effort … Read more

In NFL deal, an extra point for Adobe's Flash

Adobe Systems' Flash technology may not have qualified for the Olympics, but it is in tip-top shape for the National Football League season just getting under way.

With the bulk of NFL teams hitting the gridiron in earnest Sunday, it'll be Flash that delivers the live video streaming on the Web of NBC's Sunday Night Football games. This marks the first time that full-length NFL games are widely available online in the U.S., according to Adobe and the NFL.

The NFL-Adobe partnership wouldn't normally be quite so notable--after all, Flash is one of the most well-established … Read more

Ticket sites blamed for insane NFL prices

Today in New York, my driver was not happy. He is a New York Giants fan. The new NFL season begins tomorrow, with the Giants hosting the Washington Redskins. Despite being on the waiting list for season tickets since 1984, Tony has given up hope of ever buying a ticket.

"The Giants are moving to a new stadium in 2010," he told me, only one eye on the Lincoln Tunnel crawl. "And they're charging people $20,000 for the privilege of buying season tickets at the new stadium."

The $20,000, Tony explained, doesn't … Read more

Sprint kicks off new NFL application

If you think that "football is life," Sprint is making it much easier to get your fix at all times. On Monday, the carrier and the National Football League released a new application that brings the pigskin right to your cell phone.

NFL Mobile Live will deliver the usual stats and scores, but it goes a bit further than previous football apps by offering radio broadcasts of every game for the 2008 season and video broadcasts for eight Thursday night games starting November 6. NFL Mobile Live will also let NFL.com fantasy owners monitor a player's … Read more

PSP gets the blues for Madden

It's been awhile since we saw the PSP change its colors, maybe because it had nowhere to go but down after champagne. But the latest version of Sony's handheld comes in metallic blue in a special edition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of John Madden's pioneering football titles.

The color isn't much to write home about, as CrunchGear says, but the $200 "Madden NFL 09" package is a decent deal that includes a video titled NFL: In Just One Play, a PlayStation Network voucher, and a 1GB flash drive. Unlike the new DS Lite, … Read more

Comcast v. NFL: Round 2

Last month I wrote about how the widely anticipated face-off between the Packers and the Cowboys didn't air on either ESPN or ABC. For those outside the Green Bay, Millwaukee, or Dallas/Ft. Worth areas, the only place to catch the game was on the NFL Network. Unfortunately the station isn't offered by certain cable companies; others, such as Comcast, only include the network as part of a special programming package leaving millions of football fans out.

Frustrated by cable's unwillingness to carry the NFL Network as part of their basic package, the company launched a marketing … Read more

NFL Network vs. cable: Who's right? Who's wrong?

Did you catch the Packers-Cowboys game Thursday night? According to USA Today, less than 40 percent of the United States was able to sit at home and watch as the Cowboys edged out the Packers 37-27. The widely anticipated competition between the two 10-1 teams aired locally, but for those not living in Green Bay, Milwaukee,or Dallas/Fort Worth, the only place to see the game was on the NFL Network, a fairly recent cable channel that reportedly, "provides about 24 hours per year of live NFL football and about 8,736 hours of filler."

Unfortunately, the NFL Network isn't available on many cable systems. Some cable providers, such as Comcast, only offer the network as part of its sports tier, despite the NFL's pleas to be included as basic cable. The two major satellite companies offer the channel in their basic package, and the NFL has mounted a campaign urging viewers to dump its cable companies for an alternative that carries the NFL Network.

NFL.com offers shut-out Dallas, Green Bay fans limited free views of game

Leave it to the NFL to find an inadequate solution to the problem created by putting big games on its poorly distributed NFL Network.

If you're a football fan, you're no doubt very well aware that tonight, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers face off in one of the biggest games of the year. Yet, unless you happen to be a subscriber of one of the few cable or satellite services that carry the NFL Network--where the game is being broadcast--you won't be able to watch the game.

Ah, but if you happened to pick up … Read more
