Steve Jobs got his inspiration from the French? The French?

We are all guided by our influences, even if sometimes we don't want to admit who they really are.

Just as Mark Zuckerberg would never admit to being moved by Dr. Ruth and Genghis Khan, so Larry Page would surely never concede to the subconscious influence of "Mork and Mindy" and the early novels of John Le Carre.

However, a Reuters report is now suggesting something so beautifully preposterous, so life-affirmingly unnatural that it will lift the spirits of the most downhearted.

For this report claims that Steve Jobs was influenced by the French. Yes, the French, … Read more

Android points the way for small tablets

So, a small, inexpensive Apple tablet-like device could/maybe/possibly be in the works. If true, this may be a market better suited to Android.

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told me yesterday that he thinks a small Apple tablet is being planned. (And mainstream reports followed suit. )

Is this really all that likely? Just a cheaper, smaller iPad? That's not a Jobsian approach given the way he felt about a smaller tablet device (and the way Cook has dissed "limited function" tablets in the past).

Granted, Jobs isn't running the show there anymore but I … Read more

Gates: Apple may have to make a Surface-like device

"The world's best companies are built by fanatics and when you're in your 20s and 30s being fanatical comes...well at least it came pretty naturally to me."

That's how Bill Gates described the making of Microsoft to Charlie Rose last night on Rose's PBS show.

Now that he's in his 50s, he's still fanatical -- fanatical about Microsoft's new tablet/PC thingy known as the Surface, a device he believes Apple may have to follow.

Gates described how his goal with Microsoft had been to deliver "the magic of … Read more

Foxconn, Sharp eying Apple big-screen TV, says parts maker

Foxconn aims to use its investment in Sharp to land orders for Apple's upcoming large-screen TV -- so the ongoing speculation goes.

The latest guesswork comes from Asia Ho Chao-yang, former president of Chimei Innolux, Taiwan's largest LCD maker, and current chairman of Chi Mei Materials Technology, who concludes that Foxconn Electronics' investment in Sharp is a play to "secure iTV orders from Apple," according to Taipei-based DigiTimes.

Ho added that the launch of an iTV would benefit polarizer makers, of which Chi Mei Materials is one.

This is by no means the first time that … Read more

"We believe that there is a job for everybody that wants to be gainfully employed," he told CNET in an interview.

Steve Jobs' Atari memo sells for $27,500

Steve Jobs' Atari memo sold for $27,500 at its Sotheby's auction, just shy of twice its estimated worth.

The handwritten memo was jotted in 1974 by then-19-year-old Jobs, who described changes Atari could make to its World Cup Soccer coin arcade game to make it more fun and functional.

Jobs worked nights at Atari for a brief time in 1974, employing Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to help whittle down the hardware required for a prototype of a single-player version of Pong, the game that would go on to become Breakout. Jobs would leave Atari that summer to travel … Read more
