Activision takes a smack at the music industry over Guitar Hero

Techdirt calls out a recent spat between Activision and Warner Music, in which Activision's CEO suggests that the music labels should be paying him to use their content, rather than the inverse.

Techdirt (rightly) supports this, arguing that "The content industry always seem to over estimate how much 'value' the content provides and almost totally ignore the value provided by anyone else in the value chain." Bingo.

My kids can't get into the car with me without having The Smiths, Radiohead, Neil Young, etc. blared at them, but I keep being surprised by the music they'… Read more

British honor online music community

There are some people who actually do embrace the evolutionary impact the Internet has had on music distribution.

A you may have guessed, it's not the music industry. It is the communications industry.

In 2004, British Telecommunications (BT), which offers telecom, broadband, and networked IT services in over 170 countries, became the sponsor of the Interactive Music Awards. Now called the BTDMAs (BT Digital Music Awards), the show exclusively honors digital music entertainment. Elevated to better and bigger venues over the years, it's now televised.

Not surprisingly, the 2008 BTDMA Artist of the Year award went to Radiohead. … Read more

No violence in holiday's 'most wanted' games by teens, tweens?

Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band II are the two most wanted games for the 2008 holiday season for 8- to 17-year-old boys and girls, according to a holiday gift survey by gaming retailer Game Crazy (conducted by Weekly Reader Research). These are followed closely by Mario Kart and Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party II.

I'm having a hard time swallowing these results, mostly because these all seem too "family friendly." Game Crazy, after all, is owned by Hollywood Entertainment and could lose customers if the results were more "adult." The participants consisted of 965 qualifying respondents (owning at least one video gaming system), made up of 488 boys and 477 girls aged 8-17. The only difference between the genders: the boys want Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, while the girls don't.

With several shooter sequels coming this fall, including Gears of War 2 and Far Cry 2, and the massive global conflict fun of Tom Clancy's EndWar, where's all the blood and guts and destruction in these games? Surely kids still want to shoot and blow stuff up, right?

A more complete breakdown of the survey results are as follows:… Read more

JamLegend turns your keyboard into a guitar

Note: this site is in private beta, although you can get an invite with the link at the bottom of the post.

In a time when most people spend eight hours a day (or more) with their fingers on a keyboard, a service called JamLegend wants you to spend a few more. It turns your average, everyday keyboard into a virtual electric guitar. Think of it as Guitar Hero, without the need for special hardware or software.

To play songs, you just hit the right note at the right time, which just like Guitar Hero or Rock Band requires holding the corresponding notes and strumming with the Enter key. The site suggests two ways to play--either a "chill" mode that looks like you're typing into an Excel spreadsheet (good for playing at work) or the "jam" style where you hold your keyboard like a guitar and use the function keys like you would frets.

The jam style takes some getting used to, but is a far more satisfying way to play, and Guitar Hero or Rock Band enthusiasts will feel right at home, although depending on your keyboard it's a little more cramped.

The real power of the site is in the collection of songs and the integrated social experience that lets you play with and against your friends. Unlike the console titles that limit you to a selection of licensed music from big-name bands, the songs on JamLegend are indie. That doesn't mean they're bad though; in fact most of the songs I played would be far more fun to play than some of the B-side tracks that fill out the set list on the console games.… Read more

BackTrack is like TiVo, 'cept for guitars

Ever been noodling around on your guitar, stumble on some great hook and rush to record it, only to completely forget what you played? Line 6's new BackTrack device records while you play, so if inspiration takes hold you're able to create an instant replay.

So how's the BackTrack different than say, anything else that records audio? Basically, it is its simplicity that might make this a winner. You plug your guitar into the quarter-inch input and start playing. It automatically starts recording, and should inspiration take hold, you hit the "Mark" button and it … Read more

Unboxing 'Rock Band 2'

Mock rockers around the country will be warming up their fingers this week for Rock Band 2, the sequel to last year's hit music game. Both Rock Band and rival game Guitar Hero are banking on high-power holiday entries, with competing set lists of classic and new rock, from The Who to Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix to Metallica.

We got our hands on the new Rock Band 2 game disc and hardware, and gave the setup a quick run-through (purely in the name of journalism, of course).

It's worth noting that in fact, it's the Guitar … Read more

The 404 174: Where we reject labels

Fridays at The 404 are awesome, especially before a holiday weekend and especially when Justin gets his panties in a bundle over the term "hipster." With news like Brett Ratner's dream to make a Guitar Hero movie, the world's greatest hacker releasing an autobiography, and even more heartwarming "Calls from the public," how could you not love Fridays?

So it's official: David Duchovny has officially admitted his powerlessness over his addiction to lovemaking and has checked into rehab. Sounds like his next project with Gillian Anderson could be the SeX-Files. Isn't every … Read more

PS3 'Rock Band 2', 'Guitar Hero: World Tour' instruments interchangeable

CNET sister-site Gamespot is reporting that instruments for the games Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour will work universally with either title on PlayStation 3. In addition, the peripherals will also work with games like Rock Revolution and SingStar. SCEA director of publisher relations Michael Shorrock was quoted saying, "For the past several months, we have been working closely with Neversoft and Activision, Harmonix, and Konami to ensure that PlayStation 3 guitars and drum sets will all feature a basic level of gameplay compatibility."

While this interchangeable functionality was already confirmed for the games on Xbox … Read more

JamVOX: Karaoke for guitarists

Are you a guitarist with just enough talent to shun Guitar Hero, but too little to form your own Kiss cover band? Boy, do we have the product for you.

The JamVOX is a hardware and software combo that outfits your computer with a tiny, badass VOX amp USB sound card and a software package with virtual amplifiers and effects (ala Guitar Rig) that helps you mute or solo the guitar parts from your favorite songs. Basically, this thing lets you surgically remove your guitar heroes from their songs, and replace them with your own ham-fisted shred fest.

The JamVOX system is due out in September, with a suggested retail around $350. Video after the break.… Read more

Magnetic guitar cables prevent pops, jack damage

You're on stage, in the middle of your first song. The band's tight. The sound's dialed in. The audience is grooving. But you--idiot guitarist--forgot to do the Stevie Ray Vaughan trick of tucking your cable up through your strap, so instead it's running straight down to the floor, next to your feet. Excited, you take a step forward to pose for your friends in the front row and step right on your cord. It comes out with an ear-splitting pop and buzz. The bass player rolls his eyes as you get down on the stage, pick … Read more
