There's no shortage of battery monitoring applications in the Play store. Each of these apps offers different solutions when it comes to viewing your battery's percentage. Some add an icon to the status bar, others can place a widget on your home or lock screen, and some even place a permanent notification in the notification shade. While all of these solutions work, none is ideal.
Android should support this natively, without requiring a third-party app; I know I'm not alone in thinking this. Thankfully, it looks like Google is finally working on adding a battery percentage feature … Read more
A federal judge has dismissed a copyright infringement lawsuit that an author group brought against Google, concluding that books are like Web pages when it comes to indexing them and displaying small excerpts in search results.
The Google Books project has indexed millions of books, digitizing them without copyright holders' permission, and the Authors Guild sued over the fact. But U.S. Circuit Judge Denny Chin in New York rejected that argument, granting on Thursday Google's motion for summary judgment.
See below for a copy of the full opinion.
He agreed with Google's assertion that showing "snippets&… Read more
In June, the US Federal Communications Commission certified Google to operate the national database detailing which particular patches of "white space" spectrum were usable for wireless communications. Now, the company has opened a service that lets programs tap into that database, an automation step that Google expects will make it easier to squeeze as many bits as possible into the country's unused spectrum.
The tricky thing about white space -- electromagnetic spectrum reserved for TV broadcast but not actually in use -- is that the unused spectrum varies from region to region. Google already operated a database … Read more
The US government is on a data-gathering spree at Google, new data from the search giant reveals.
Between January and June 2013, the US government issued nearly 11,000 requests to Google asking for user information, or about 42 percent of the global total. India was second with nearly 2,700 government requests.
The collective requests from governments around the world during that six-month period have more than doubled in the three-and-a-half years since Google's first government transparency report, which covered the second half of 2009. "And these numbers," Google said in a blog post Thursday, "… Read more

YouTube channel owners appear to be taking the stance that the Google+ cure is worse than the common YouTube comment. When Google announced that it was going to replace its original commenting system with one powered by Google+, reactions seemed split between a positive reception for improving the level of discourse and giving channel owners more moderation tools, versus the concerns of commenters who felt that their free speech would be infringed. However, in the aftermath of the Google+ comments rollout, some longtime YouTubers are taking their displeasure with the new system public, posting their videos on YouTube but moving … Read more

Project Loon might be a crazy moon shot, but Google is building its balloons to stay afloat an unusually long time.
A key component of the Google [x] Lab project to deliver Wi-Fi to remote parts of the world via souped-up weather balloons is the material that the balloons are made of, according to a new Google video. And it sounds like Google hasn't yet settled on a solution.
Each balloon is designed to stay up for 100 days or three trips around the globe. That's much longer than most weather balloons that travel at the stratospheric heights … Read more
