Staples retail chief outs 'five or six' Amazon tablets

Amazon is planning to launch several new tablets, according to comments made by one of its retail partners.

Speaking to Reuters in an interview published today, Demos Parneros, president of U.S. retail for Staples, said that Amazon is currently working on "up to five or six" tablets that will come in all different sizes. One of the versions will include a 10-inch display, according to Parneros. He did not say when the devices might launch.

Reports have been swirling for months that Amazon would be launching new tablets sometime this year. Last month, a credible source told … Read more

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean could be headed to more devices

Google's latest sweet Android 4.1 update, better known as Jelly Bean, looks to be rolling out to more devices, even as many are still waiting to be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier today, HTC confirmed that Android 4.1 is coming to its HTC One X, One S, and One XL.

Not confirmed but just as compelling is the report from SamMobile that Samsung has begun testing Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S3 and could push an update to its new flagship phone later this summer. A little harder to believe is the report's additional contention that testing is also under way on the Galaxy S2, and that it could also receive Android 4.1 if all goes well with its successor device.… Read more

Judge your iPad by its literary masterpiece book cover

I know e-books are convenient, but I just can't tear myself away from running my fingers down the spines of real books and listening for that crinkling sound of a fresh hardcover bending open. I like the way they look. I like the way they feel.

My iPad may finally get that same sort of love if Out of Print's new Kickstarter project meets its goal. Backers will have their choice of 10 different classic literature book covers to adorn their Kindle Fire or iPad 2 or 3.… Read more

Are music streaming services reducing the number of albums released?

Opinions about the future of the music business cover a lot of ground, but one thing is certain: today's bands release albums at a much slower pace than bands did in previous eras. It's not just that Spotify and other streaming services have been taking their toll on sales; I doubt too many of today's top artists make albums at the rate Bob Dylan did early in his career. He released 21 albums between 1962-1981. The Beatles were even more prolific and released five albums in the U.S. in 1964: "Meet The Beatles!," "… Read more

Kindle Fire forecast cut by analyst amid Nexus 7 concern

Amazon's Kindle Fire may be cooling down.

That's according to Cowen analyst Kevin Kopelman, who today cut his forecast on the company's revenue, as well as sales of its Kindle e-reader and Kindle Fire tablet.

The forecast comes ahead of an expected refresh of Amazon's tablet, which made a splash late last year with its $200 price point. Since then, however, several other lower priced entrants have come out, most notably Google's own Nexus 7, which is selling at the same price, and a widely anticipated iPad Mini from Apple. As such, analysts are … Read more
