What makes a good car?

I should write more here about cars. I certainly talk about cars more than enough with friends and coworkers. I've written for the BMW Car Club of America's Roundel Magazine, but somehow my dream job in automotive journalism never materialized...

Good cars are safe, fast, affordable to purchase, economical to operate, reliable, capacious, comfortable, and attractive.

No, of course you can't get all of those characteristics in one car; each conflicts with one or more of the others. Safe and fast, for example... obviously incompatible, right? Well, no. Not at all. The only thing that makes a … Read more

Shopping for a private jet

There have been several stories in the news this week about airplanes and spacecraft. I'm an Air Force veteran myself, and I've been an Aviation Week subscriber for over 20 years, but you don't have to be in the industry to keep up with the latest in aerospace technology. Even CNET covers this kind of thing today, and some of the stories I've seen this week have gotten me thinking about buying a private jet.

I think Esther Dyson deserves a lot of credit for bridging the computer and aerospace industries. In 2005, Esther inaugurated her … Read more

Looks like I'm up and running...

Well, I got some quick training on CNET's blogging software, so I'm ready to get going with this thing.

First, my thanks to CNET's Michael Kanellos for inviting me to join this site. I've known Michael a long time, and it's always a pleasure to work with him.

I'd also like to expand a little on the short bio that appears on the main Speeds and Feeds page.

I'm the VP of System Architecture at Montalvo Systems, a startup here in Silicon Valley. I can't say much about Montalvo yet; we're … Read more

Hot deal on the Samsung SPF-72H Digital Picture Frame

Digital picture frames have been around for a while, but they just don't seem to have taken off in the way I had expected. I suppose it can be chalked up to their seeming like more of a novelty than the sort of pragmatic sort of technology that one would think of, like an MP3 player, but one has to admit they're pretty darn cool. If you've been thinking about picking one of these up, now's your chance as you can get the Samsung SPF-72H Digital Picture Frame for only $129.99 after a $20 rebate … Read more

How does the BBB work with ratings on CNET?

We receive lots of comments from customers who want to know what steps they can take to check out a store prior to making their purchase. While we investigate all stores' complaints and performance before rating them, we also check out their rating by the Better Business Bureau to be sure they have a satisfactory rating in order to remain listed on any CNET site.

Remember that you can check out a store's BBB rating prior to making a purchase by going to our Certified Store Program page. Just click on the Better Business Bureau link located under the … Read more
