News flash: 13-year-olds can text quickly

Morgan Pozgar, a 13-year-old, won LG's National Texting Championship yesterday. Her fast fingers netted her $25,000.

Pozgar bested her East Coast competitors and won $10,000 along with the title of East Coast champ.

With little time to ice her thumbs, the 13-year-old successfully texted "Supercalifragilisticexpialidoucious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. If you say it loud enough you'll always sound precocious," to beat Eli Tirosh (who won the West Coast crown).

So the next time you get on your teen's case for texting, just remember that they're in … Read more

Texting your way to $25,000

After crowning the West Coast champ last month, the winner of LG's National Texting Championship will be determined tomorrow night in New York, with $25,000 at stake.

The East Coast "texthletes" will use their enV or V handsets to compete in single-elimination brackets to determine the East Coast champ. That person wins $10,000, and later that day they will take on Eli Tirosh (who won the West Coast crown) for an extra $15,000.

Registration is still open as of press time, and it seems like it could be worth your time even if you … Read more

LG FM37: MP3 doesn't come much slicker

LG greased up the mobile phone slide earlier this year and threw the fashion victims down it with the Shine. It's a gloriously shinetastic piece of kit, and now LG has done the same thing for the MP3 market with the FM37--a super-stylish, metallic MP3 player with a touch-screen interface.

The FM37 looks like the voluptuous love child of the Shine and the iRiver Clix, with its epicurean good looks and its charming interface. It's also got some great features, such as MPEG-4 video playback and support for the delightful open-source OGG format of music compression.

LG's 'Return to Nature' laptop

This LG laptop may be named "Return to Nature," but we're not buying it. After all, it's not made of bamboo or anything.

The limited-edition "Xnote S1" does have some nicely engraved foliage adorning its case, somewhat reminiscent of Medion's crystal flower design. More impressive is what's inside the 15.4-inch-screen computer--a 2.15GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of memory and a 160GB hard drive, according to BornRich.

The price of the laptop, which is destined for the Korean market, is unknown. We hope only that it's a tad less … Read more

LG Shine in a candybar

LG has come up with a candybar version of their deliciously bling-tastic LG Shine phone, but it is unfortunately only available in Russia at this point. A lot of the specs remain the same as its slider phone predecessor; a 262,144-color screen, a 240x320 display, a 2-megapixel camera with auto focus, Bluetooth, and a microSD card slot. No word on whether the candybar Shine, also known as the LG KE770, will make its way across the Atlantic just yet, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

Samsung announces "Duo HD" Blu-ray plus HD DVD player

And then there were two.

Samsung will join its archrival LG in releasing a combo HD disc player later this year. According to a brief press release, the Korean consumer electronics giant will introduce the BD-UP5000 "Duo HD" player this year. The release also specified that the player will "fully support both HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats and their interactive technologies, HDi and BD-Java." No pricing or additional feature details on the Samsung BD-UP5000 were made available.

The official announcement of the BD-UP5000 confirms rumors that have been percolating for months. Most recently, Home Theater Blog … Read more

Cingular and Verizon Wireless drop kiddie phones

Both Cingular and Verizon Wireless have pulled back from the kid-focused cell phone market as of this week. Verizon has completely halted production of the LG Migo VX1000, while Cingular will only sell its Firefly handsets through its online store (The Firefly will continue to be sold in big U.S. retailers like Wal-Mart and Target). Verizon says that it appears the LG VX3450L has taken the Migo's place -- the LG VX3450L is identical to the LG VX3450 but it has support for Chaperone, a Verizon service that lets parents keep close tabs on their kids. It appears … Read more

VW media player: Herbie would approve

We're convinced that someone high up at Volkswagen is a wannabe rock star. First, the carmaker offers a complimentary "GarageMaster" guitar with many of its new models. Now, it's come out with VW media player co-branded with LG.

This is no ordinary sticker job either. "The player will have an aluminum body and come in three of the same colors the cars offers; Salsa Red, Shadow Blue and Sunflower Yellow," according to Everything USB, as well as featuring a 2.4-inch LCD for video and a battery that allows up to 20 hours of … Read more

'Banana phone' isn't one, really

There's a funny thing about LG's new "banana phone." Unless we're mistaken, it doesn't have much in common with its namesake fruit.

For one thing, it's not yellow. In fact, the only color at all (other than white) seems to be a hint of orange. And even though it does have a slightly curved form, we highly doubt that you'd mistake it for a Chiquita if it were hanging around the produce section at Safeway. The LG-SV280 does make good on the other half of its name, however, in that it is … Read more
