High-tech apparel goes bulletproof

Much of the clothing that's appeared on Crave has focused on technologies like music or communications gear sewn into the fabric. (Except for those dorky ties that Caroline McCarthy is so fond of.)

But if you're looking for a truly urban outfit, this may be for you: the bulletproof raincoat, which Spycatcher claims will resist everything from a pocket knife to "9mm Full Metal Jacket Round Nose projectiles." But Gizmodo notes that the $2,000 garment still leaves your neck exposed, so don't expect it to be of much help against vampires.

Another watch for Felipe Massa

Richard Mille is to watches what Frank Buchwald is becoming to lamps.

His latest functional art masterpiece is the RM011 Flyback Chronograph, a descendent of the RM 09 developed for F1 driver Felipe Massa, created with Formula 1 racing in mind. And with an estimated price between $60,000 and $80,000, it will fit right in with your pricey F1 mouse mats and Ferrari cell phone.

Gear Live and Watchismo seem to have got the scoop on the RM011 watch, which was officially due for unveiling later in March, according to Kronos Blog.

For those of you who know … Read more

Blue screen of death--c'mon, it's funny!

Most of us have, at one point or another, been confronted with the ominous blue screen of death, that dreaded block of text that lets you know your Windows PC has encountered a serious system error and--to put it scientifically--you're probably massively screwed. According to the rules of computing, the BSOD generally appears when you're composing some life-altering document--on deadline.

Instead of tossing your computer out the window or crumbling in a heap of despair, why not enjoy a good chuckle over your ill fortune? In the spirit of laughing in the face of life's travails, PersonalizationMall.… Read more

Dorky ties for dorky people

When people say "geek chic," they're usually referring to hipsters in black Dolce & Gabbana glasses typing away on their MacBook Pros. But everybody knows that your average legit geek is more in the mold of Dwight Schrute than Gideon Yago (I bet that guy doesn't even know what PHP stands for).

Want to go for some real geek chic? Check out ProductDose's feature on nerdy neckties. My favorite is the binary tie, which probably looks like a normal blue tie from more than three yards away. But up close, it's clearly a bunch … Read more

A gold stylus for the Midas touch

Sharp always seemed like a sensible brand, doing its share to come out with new technologies without being so flashy. So we're slightly disappointed that it has gone Hollywood for a moment with a solid gold stylus for a new smart phone coming out in Japan.

Nintendo also made a gold stylus for the DS Lite, but that's different. (Paris Hilton reportedly designed one of their special editions, after all.) Besides, the Nintendo stylus didn't cost $536, which is what the Sharp version will set you back. As Gizmodo notes, that's almost as much as the … Read more

Shoe shoppers step up to virtual mirror

Love the idea of walking out of the store with hip new shoes, but don't like the idea of trying on a dozen pairs to see which ones look best? Researchers from the image-processing department at Berlin's Heinrich-Hertz-Institut have come up with a system that lets shoppers "try on" footwear without having to lace, tie, buckle or Velcro.

A camera captures the customer's feet in standard fitting boots, then imposes 3D computer-generated video images of various styles onto those same tootsies. Standing before the "virtual mirror," consumers select their looks via touch-screen and … Read more

Natural look may not flatter the iPod

Given the countless ways that have been devised to encase the iPod, we're surprised that it's taken so long for the latest trend to reach the ubiquitous music player: lumber.

As wood has become popular for everything from computers and laptop cases to TVs and cameras, it seems no-brainer to apply sylvan designs to iPods and MP3 players, as Tokyomango notes that Japanese toy maker Asuka Kobo has done. Then again, maybe it has something to do with the way they look. Somehow, wood just doesn't seem appropriate for the sleek design of the media player, no … Read more

Code M, the musical shoes

Almost exactly one year ago, LL International--parent company of Dada footwear--quietly announced the Code M system, a "proprietary, patent-pending wireless technology application for footwear that delivers both audio and data." Today, I'm refreshing my original Alpha Blog here to remind us all of the original design of these--how shall we say? Awesome shoes. You may be rightly wondering why, and the reason is twofold. First, we've just recently managed to get our hands on a preproduction pair of said footwear, and the final sale model is due for review any day now. Second, I once again … Read more

'Pac-Man' belt is a wow find at WonderCon

While I was at the three-day WonderCon convention in San Francisco this past weekend, not only did I get an eyeful of loads of comics books and celebrities like the original Lois Lane, Noel Neill; Cassandra "Elvira" Peterson; and Chase Masterson (Leeta from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). I also got some great schwag.

Standing toward the back of the hall at Moscone South was what appeared to be a majestic Borg cube-esque structure of T-shirts, hoodies and the like. It was there that I not only found a classic Amazing Spidey shirt, but a Namco Pac-Man belt. … Read more

A car cam for Paris Hilton?

It's official: Crave has a link to Paris Hilton. A couple of weeks ago we panned the idea of this car-board black box device for any number of reasons. But today we read on GeekSugar that Kathy and Rick Hilton expressed interest in the Gadget Universe product for their ubiquitous daughter to keep tabs on paparazzi and other media hounds. We're not sure what to make of this latest development, but we do agree with GeekSugar's trenchant observation: "Personally I wonder if Paris really needs any more cameras around her than she already has."
