The Fusion, Ford's bread-and-butter mid-size sedan, gets a significant update for 2010, complete with new body work, new cabin tech options, and an all new hybrid model. Ford built on the hybrid powertrain technology it already uses in the Ford Escape Hybrid, but significantly retunes it for the Fusion, giving it a top electric speed of about 47 mph. Better Place aims by 2012 to bring a $1 billion electric-car infrastructure system to the California Bay Area, whose leaders unveiled policies Thursday to fast-track the adoption of electric cars.

At the 2008 LA Auto Show, Mini unveiled an all electric version of its Mini Cooper. Dubbed the Mini E, this vehicle sacrifices its rear seats to make room for a huge array of lithium ion batteries, giving the tiny EV a range of 156 miles.
Space is about all that the Mini E has sacrificed, as Mini claims that power and handling are on par with the gasoline and diesel variants of the Cooper.

Coulomb Technologies has inked deals with service stations throughout California to provide smart equipment for charging electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2009.
Solar panels will power some of Coulomb's networked equipment, which can provide electric cars about a 10-mile driving range after an hour of charging.
The dozens of planned locations include gas stations along Interstates 101, 5, and 99, which snake north to south through much of California's length. A few of the stations will be closer to cities, and some already offer a mix of cleaner fuels, such as hydrogen, biodiesel, and ethanol.

LOS ANGELES--The Green Car Journal gave its 2009 Green Car of the Year award to the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. This year's list of nominees included the BMW 335d, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid, and Smart ForTwo. The Jetta TDI uses a 2-liter, turbocharged, diesel, four-cylinder engine to achieve an EPA-rated 41mpg highway fuel economy and 30mpg city. In its efforts to put electric cars on the road by 2010, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced a partnership with the state of Oregon during his keynote at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Oregon Department of Transportation and Portland General Electric will develop an infrastructure of charging stations, and Nissan will supply a fleet of electric cars to the state. Ghosn also said that Oregon will offer a tax credit to buyers of electric vehicles. Toyota will reveal a Camry hybrid concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show with an engine that uses compressed natural gas.
The concept signals that Toyota's hybrid technology will be used with engines that operate on a variety of fuels.
