Analyst: iPad forcing rival tablet makers to cut back

Facing unrelenting competition from Apple's iPad, many rival tablet makers will build fewer tablets than originally planned, according to a J.P. Morgan analyst.

In a research note released yesterday, analyst Mark Moskowitz said that non-Apple tablet makers have gotten an early "dose of reality" by failing to produce a high-volume tablet that comes close to matching the demand for the iPad.

Verizon to offer 4G-enabled Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Just a couple of days ago, J.K. Shin, Samsung's president of mobile communications, said an LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was in the works for later this year, but it looks like it's going to be sooner rather than later.

Verizon Wireless announced today that it will start taking preorders for the 4G Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on June 8. The carrier will offer a 16GB version for $529.99 and a 32GB for $629.99 but did not specify when the tablets would ship or be available in stores.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 to hit Best Buy, 4G model on the way

Samsung's new 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab tablet is slated to reach consumers in June, with Best Buy revealed as one of the retailers, but Samsung is also busy prepping a 4G edition due to hit the market later this year.

Best Buy's product page touting the Galaxy Tab says only that it's "coming soon," however, comments made recently by J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division, confirmed that the new 10.1-inch tablet and its smaller 8.9-inch cousin will reach consumers in June.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Google I/O Edition review: Thin, light, and spinnable

Samsung will officially launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on June 17. A couple of weeks back we were one of the lucky 5,000 to receive the Google I/O version of the tablet and put it through its paces.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to ship with Honeycomb 3.1

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet will come out of the box with the latest version of Android Honeycomb 3.1.

A Wi-Fi-only edition of Galaxy Tab 10.1 is due to hit the consumer market on June 8. The 16GB version is expected to cost $499, while the 32GB version will run $599.

Swing your sabers! Today is Geek Pride Day

Despite the fact that I have crashed computers since I was 8, know more people online than in real life, and have knifed four people consecutively in Battlefield, I have somehow managed to miss out on the fact that today, May 25, is annual Geek Pride Day.

No more, however. When I found out about this hallowed day of geekery today, I immediately went and put on my Boba Fett/Empire Strikes Back T-shirt and listened to the original movie soundtrack in a 320Kbps MP3.

Why is May 25 the chosen date? Well, a few critical events happen to fall on this day:

May 25, 1977: Star Wars opened in 32 theaters and became an instant cult-classic. May 25, 2001: Two weeks after "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams died, fans commemorated his passing by creating " Towel Day," playing off an amusing life-saving reference in his famous book. A special day for Discworld fans. Apple forces Samsung to hand over Galaxy prototypes

Apple's legal battle with Samsung has taken a new twist. The California outfit is suing the Korean corporation over alleged copying of Apple products in Samsung's Android range, and a federal court is forcing Samsung to hand over samples of new phones for Apple to pore over.

The phones and tablets in question are the Samsung Galaxy S 2, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and Droid Charge. Fortunately for Samsung, only Apple's legal team for this case will see the products, so no one from Apple or even Apple's in-house lawyers will see the rival devices.

While the Samsung Galaxy S 2 has just gone on sale in the UK and the Infuse 4G in the US, the other three devices aren't yet on the market.

Nielsen: Tablets are hot, but few actually own one

Led by the iPad, the tablet market has taken off with a bang, but even with all the hoopla, less than 5 percent of U.S. consumers polled by Nielsen actually own one.
