Formula 1 champ uses BlackBerry app to drive car

Vodafone teamed up with Formula 1 team Mercedes McLaren to develop an application that kicks the pants off of any iPhone application on the market.

In a video circulating on YouTube.com, engineers Simon and Steve show off an accelerometer/gyroscope application they built for their BlackBerry Storm that uses Bluetooth technology to steer a modified remote control car.

After achieving victory in their Remote Control Office Grand Prix, they apply their technology to a McLaren Formula 1 car for world champion Lewis Hamilton to test drive, but not behind the wheel.

This application raises the question, if you're … Read more

Promising, but far from perfect

vPost's free-to-try application aggregates your multimedia into one interface and makes it easier to share and post online. You'll be able to attach up to five separate media files--up to 1.5MB--including audio and video clips, photos, text notes, and files stored on your internal memory or SD card. That makes it a contender for serious sharing and social networking junkies, especially with convenience tools like the Favorite button, which lets you automatically route a multimedia bundle in a click to a preset e-mail address (including the CC and BCC lines, you can squeeze out three). vPost: Send multimedia bundles from BlackBerry

vPost, which launched this week for BlackBerrys running version 4.5 and 4.6*, is a free-to-try application that aggregates your multimedia into one interface and makes it easier to share and post online. (*A version for the Storm is due later this month.) You'll be able to attach up to five separate media files--up to 1.5 MB--including audio and video clips, photos, text notes, and files stored on your internal memory or SD card.

At a lifetime purchase of about $10, the application seems a bit steep for something that can be accomplished, albeit slower, using the … Read more

MySpace for BlackBerry updates

This week, MySpace released an update to MySpace for BlackBerry that pads the original downloadable app with more speed, convenience, and a bit of European flair.

Version 1.5 adds a new navigation icon for viewing friends' updates from within the app. In addition, when you click the thumbnail photo next to a friend's status message, the app moves you to a full-screen version for more leisurely reading. This has been a top-requested feature since version 1.0 was released, and all we can say is, it's about time.

Messaging has also gotten some fine-tuning in this version. … Read more

How will BlackBerry App World work?

This was originally posted at ZDNet's Between the Lines.

Research In Motion launched its application store--dubbed BlackBerry App World--and the pricing model will immediately draw comparisons to Apple's App Store setup. That comparison, however, only goes so far.

For starters, App World's pricing model has raised a bit of a ruckus because it veers a bit from Apple's scheme. But a business audience isn't going to sweat a $2.99 application compared with a 99 cent minimum-price app. And RIM's audience is likely to even pay higher prices, if the App World … Read more

BlackBerry Bold sales suspended in Japan

The largest cell phone operator in Japan said Friday that it has stopped selling Research In Motion's BlackBerry Bold because the phone overheats while the battery is being recharged.

Of those devices, NTT DoCoMo says it has received complaints from about 30 users that the phone's keyboard area had heated up, Reuters reported.
