Former Apple general counsel denies backdating involvement

Nancy Heinen, the former general counsel at Apple, filed court papers Friday denying charges by the Securities and Exchange Commission that she orchestrated stock option backdating at the company.

Bloomberg reported that the court papers deny the specific charge that Heinen ordered another lawyer in Apple's legal department to prepare documents authorizing a stock option grant to CEO Steve Jobs with an earlier grant date. However, the documents told a story of a board meeting that never took place, drawing the ire of the SEC and forcing Apple to record charges to reflect the true value of the options. … Read more

CNET Live - Episode 8 - Show Notes

A perfect show! Well except for the whole thing going off the air halfway through. Apparently somebody kicked a cord and unplugged us. I think it was Brian's cat.

Watch the show

And we didn't have our mics on at the beginning of the show. Brian's cat again. Had our tongues.

But beyond that we had some great stuff!

Things we Crave

Warming keyboard

Software prevents cats from emailing. (But not unplugging the show.)

iTunes goes DRM-free with EMI

Apple's iTunes store began selling DRM-free songs from EMI on Wednesday.

DRM (digital rights management) software prevents owners from copying or freely using a digital file across multiple devices.

As expected, all the songs from music label EMI that are sold on iTunes are now available in DRM-free versions. Shoppers have the option to purchase either a 256kbps AAC-encoded DRM-free song for $1.29 via iTunes Plus, or the usual 128kbps AAC-encoded DRM-version for 99 cents.

"We expect more than half of the songs on iTunes will be offered in iTunes Plus versions by the end of this … Read more

Gates and Jobs: Same stage, same time

Now here's the tech world's equivalent of Nixon going to China.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates will share a stage next week at the D: All Things Digital tech conference in California next week for a 75-minute joint interview.

Besides a brief shared appearance at an Apple event in 1983, the two have never appeared together in public before. The prospect has bloggers in a lather over what will be asked, what should be asked and what they'll say. (A guess: "So, do you think Barry Bonds is using or what?")… Read more

Apple's hiring 'iPhone Personal Trainers,' but what's the start date?

Apple wants to hire "iPhone Personal Trainers" to work at a Sacramento call center doing iPhone technical support.

The company has posted two job announcements on its Web site, one for an iPhone Personal Trainer and the other for an iPhone Personal Trainer Team Manager.

The manager's job description includes this breathless description: "You'll drive customer excellence home like a World Series player."

The open house is today at Apple's campus in Elk Grove, outside of Sacramento. Apple's Web site lists the Elk Grove address as 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove.

The Fake Steve Jobs is...

...really, really funny.

A high-profile search for the identity of the blogger behind The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs is under way, with Valleywag and Business Week leading the charge. The site is full of satirical posts from Steve's point of view--or, at least, one who would be Steve--on just about anything. Fake Steve, a "benevolent dictator" according to his Blogger profile, plays "Dear Diary" with such topics as the iPhone development process, U2 lead singer "Bono's driving skills", or deeper thoughts like "Jesus didn't go to college either" (… Read more

Apple: Get the LED out!

A lot of people I've talked to recently (both Mac and Windows users) have been talking about getting a Mac laptop. It's pretty evenly split between MacBooks and the more expensive MacBook Pros, with some of my friends looking for a portable computer to bring with them for common tasks, while others need that extra processing power for music recording and film editing. Whenever I've been asked about getting a new Apple laptop though, my answer more recently has been the same: wait a little bit longer.

Judging from the rumor mill, Apple may announce new MacBooks … Read more

Apple's Steve Jobs highest paid CEO in America

Apple CEO Steve Jobs was the highest paid chief executive in America for 2006, according to a list released by Forbes on Thursday.

Jobs only draws a dollar a year in salary, which puts him behind practically the entire employment base of the country in that category. But his stock compensation isn't bad. Jobs also owns Apple stock valued at $646.6 million last year, twice as much as the second-highest paid CEO on the list, Occidental Petroleum's Ray Irani. (Somewhere, there's a joke about an oil executive named Irani, but anyway.)

It certainly was a good … Read more

Jobs pledges 'a greener Apple'

After years of being tight-lipped about the company's environmental efforts, Apple CEO Steve Jobs posted an 1,880 word open letter online Wednesday about the computer maker's work to be green. Jobs cites criticism from environmental groups as his impetus to talk about Apple's initiatives in recycling old products and removing toxic chemicals from new products.

"It is generally not Apple's policy to trumpet our plans for the future...Unfortunately this policy has left our customers, shareholders, employees and the industry in the dark about Apple's desires and plans to become greener. So today … Read more

Why Apple's board stands behind Jobs

Apple's board knows a good thing when it sees it.

The brief but strong statement it issued this afternoon in defense of Steve Jobs left no doubt about the depth of the board's support for its CEO.

But how about a reality check, folks?

Did anyone really believe Apple would mess with its main meal ticket? A few minutes after the board statement hit the wire, the company announced its latest earnings report--and it was a dazzler: profit soared 88 percent on a 21 percent sales climb. Those are the sort of numbers that buy lifetime job security. … Read more
