The 404 252: Where there's no place like home

Happy New Year! Today we sit with down with Caroline McCarthy and K-Flow from Heavy & Flow to talk about our winter break shenanigans. Justin Yu joins us over the phone from beautiful San Fransisco to remind us how clean the show was the week he wasn't around.

We want to thank all of our listeners for the tons of mail we received over the break, it really means a lot. Here's to making 2009 the year of The 404!

So sit back, relax, and enjoy our first episode back. There won't be a show tomorrow, but we'll be broadcasting live everyday from CES 2009 beginning this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.

Print news is fading, but the content lives on

It's been about 20 years since Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web on the back of the Internet. For more than a billion people on the planet, the Web today is an alternate, digital universe that is gradually overtaking the analog, physical world as a source of information and connections.

Earlier this month, the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press conducted a survey that rendered two obvious conclusions: the Internet has overtaken newspapers as a source of national and international news, and television, led by CNN, continues to serve as the main source.

According to the Pew survey, … Read more

The 404 251: Where we're innocent when we dream

What better way to close out 2008 than with Steve Guttenberg in the studio? Steve joins Wilson, Caroline, and I to reflect back on a year of mostly upsetting news. We dive deep into Steve's twisted banana-pilfering dreams and try and figure out the man behind The Audiophiliac.

2008 may have been a terrible year for planet Earth, but it was a great one for The 404. We want to thank all of our dedicated listeners, fans, chatroom buddies, and anyone who has ever called or wrote in to the show. The 404 is nothing without you and we … Read more

The 404 247: Where Wicker Hollow is stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel

Back by popular demand, Wicker Hollow is in the studio with us today on The 404. Chris Leone and Chris Sparta join us to talk about their new album, "Wake Up Call," in stores and online December 20. Make sure you call into the show for a chance to win free tickets to their CD release party December 20 at The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey.

Justin Yu is gone for the rest of 2008, so now we can finally get some stuff done. That includes talking to the Wicker Hollow guys about a recent controversial Saturday Night Live skit, George W. Bush's ability to dodge shoes, N.J. marijuana laws, and what it's like playing in a punk rock band.

Editor in Chief Libe Goad from AOL's Gamedaily.com will join us tomorrow to talk about all things gaming, so make sure you tune in for that one.

The 404 246: Where we send Justin back to the right coast

Technically it's the "left" coast but yes, Justin Yu will be traveling three hours back in time next week as he makes his way back to California to spend the holidays with family. So my present to Justin is doing this blog post for him.

The 404 will continue on as we've got plenty of great guests planned for the last week of shows for 2008. Make sure you listen next week as we've got Wicker Hollow, Rana Sobhany, and Libe Goad all booked! Also, send us your best Morgan Freeman impressions for a chance to win the new Prince of Persia video game.

On today's show, we reminisce about last night's debauchery known as the "Black-Ops Holiday Party." Justin was a disaster after just three sips of rum and we've got the photographic evidence to prove it. We'll disclose those photos at a later date--maybe when he's gone next week.

Check out today's episode to learn more about the nude photographic habits of America's teenage population along with some great voice mails and e-mails from the public. Have a great weekend!

Jeff Raikes to join Costco board

Apparently, saving the world isn't taking up all of Jeff Raikes' time.

The former Microsoft executive and current CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is joining the board of directors of Costco Wholesale, the giant retail chain.

"We are very pleased to welcome Jeff as a new member of our board. Not only does Jeff bring over 25 years of private sector experience, he also brings his reputation as a trusted and respected leader," Costco Chairman Jeff Brotman said in a statement.

Raikes announced his plans to leave Microsoft in January and was named CEO of the Gates FoundationRead more

The 404 235: Where now we love Christian rock

With Justin at home sick, we invite MTI into the studio today to take his place. After we take the proper sanitary precautions with Justin's microphone, we chat about Twitter's questionable decision to reject a $500 million buyout offer from Facebook.

Next it's on to a fairy tale story starring Steve Jobs as the fairy godmother. Seems some kid (who is clearly more well-off than the average college student) sent him an e-mail desperately seeking a student discount for Final Cut Studio. Jobs waved his magic wand and sent him the package totally free. Wow Steve, that's awfully nice of you. How bout hooking The 404 up with a Mac Pro that won't drop our Ustream feed?

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the short week. Download today's episode for more stories from around the Web, a ridiculously huge Calls from the Public session, and some Christian rock apologies.

All-American hi-fi for Obama's White House?

America may not make world-class cars anymore, we don't build plasma TVs, or iPods, cameras, or all that much technology of any sort, but in high-end audio, we rule!

Come 2009 I'd love to see the best of the best American audio installed at the White House. The sort of system that the President could, after a hard day's work solving the world's problems, use to kick out the jams with a few James Brown or Parliament-Funkadelic tunes.

I'll volunteer my services to assemble such a system (donated by the manufacturers), with the following components:… Read more

Faced with a struggling economy, the best accessories in life are free

I hate buying accessories for my iPhone; it's totally counter-intuitive. You're saying that I need to buy OTHER stuff to make the phone I just bought more useful? It doesn't make sense to me, and it doesn't make sense to Jeff Staple of Staple Design either.

Check out this iPhone/iPod Touch cradle he made out of a simple binder clip that (let's be real here) you can easily liberate from your company's supply closet! It might take a bit of tweaking with pliers to get the wire to stand up on its own, but I'd rather do-it-myself than give away more of my hard earned money! Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, don't get one, I'm about to make these by the dozen and and sell them all on eBay; watch the first ones go up tonight. How does $10.99 + tax sound? Race you to the patent office!

More pics after the break.… Read more

The 404 216: Where no one can hear you scream

Today, Dead Space producer Rich Briggs joins us for the second half of the show to talk about one of the scariest games we've played in recent memory.

But first, we dish out the dirt on video gamer enemy No. 1, Jack Thompson. It seems old Jacky has finally been disbarred from practicing law in the great state of Florida; good riddance. Next, Wilson enlightens us as to why the Internet may be killing our brains and how he knows the guy who can help.

The second half of the show features an interview with Dead Space producer Rich Briggs. We ask Rich all about his terrifyingly good game and what went into making one of the creepiest games of all time. We take live questions from that chat room and see what horror movies influenced Rich and the rest of the Dead Space team.

Finally, our Dan Ackerman contest winner is announced and Zen from Arizona has taken first prize. Check one of his winning submission (Ackerman/Palin), along with some other entries below.
