Whited00r brings iOS 5 to older iPhones, iPod Touches

Those of you disheartened because your older iPhone or iPod Touch won't support iOS 5 have an "unofficial" alternative.

Available for free, a piece of software dubbed Whited00r can install a custom edition of iOS 5.1 on the iPhone 2G and 3G as well as the iPod Touch 1G and 2G. The software works by tapping into the Restore feature directly through iTunes. And it automatically includes the latest release of Cydia to jailbreak your device. So unlike other hacks, Whited00r isn't too difficult to set up.

Most of the key features that iOS 5 … Read more

Momentum shift: SOPA, PIPA opponents now in driver's seat

The broad support in the U.S. government for two controversial antipiracy bills appears to be evaporating.

The latest string of setbacks for supporters of the bills came Saturday when Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the Oversight committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, said that he was promised by Majority leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) that a vote on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) will not occur "unless there is consensus on the bill."

"While I remain concerned about Senate action on the Protect IP Act [a similar bill to SOPA introduced into the Senate … Read more

Frosty white Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Sprint

Just when I thought the white smartphone craze had died down, Samsung says it plans to bring a pearly version of the Galaxy S II to Sprint for $199 on January 8.

Of course I should have known that milky-hued handsets are here to stay. First popularized by Apple's iPhone and then adopted by its Android competition, many of this winter's mobile devices sport a frosty skin. Motorola's Droid Razr and the Galaxy S II on T-Mobile are a few examples. … Read more

Facebook hands out White Hat debit cards to hackers

A few companies pay money to bug hunters. But Facebook is giving out something more unique than just a check. Some security researchers are getting a customized "White Hat Bug Bounty Program" Visa debit card.

The researchers, who can make thousands of dollars for reporting just one security hole on the social-networking site, can use the card to make purchases, just like a credit card, or create a PIN and take money out of an ATM. As the researchers find more bugs, Facebook can add more money to their accounts.

Facebook wanted to do something special for the … Read more

DOJ: Lying on Match.com needs to be a crime

The U.S. Department of Justice is defending computer hacking laws that make it a crime to use a fake name on Facebook or lie about your weight in an online dating profile at a site like Match.com.

In a statement obtained by CNET that's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, the Justice Department argues that it must be able to prosecute violations of Web sites' often-ignored, always-unintelligible "terms of service" policies.

The law must allow "prosecutions based upon a violation of terms of service or similar contractual agreement with an employer or provider," Richard … Read more

White House: There is no evidence aliens exist--yet

What if it's just us? What if this is all there is?

The clocks going back stimulated me to this thought. Then, grabbing my laptop from beneath my 1,200-thread sheet duvet cover, I discovered that the White House might think the same.

You see, the president's "We The People" initiative, which allows groups to ask specific questions of the government and get a response, received a couple of queries about alien life, existence beyond here, and little green people with strange antennae coming out of their heads.

Naturally, interested entities were highly expectant for a … Read more
