Apple says Samsung violated court order in patent case

Apple appears to be stirring up more legal headches for Samsung.

In a court document filed yesterday, Apple reportedly accused Samsung of only partially complying with a court order requiring the Korean handset maker to provide source code for the products involved in a patent suit, according to Bloomberg.

Samsung allegedly produced code for just one version of its 4G smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablets accused of patent infringement, Apple claimed in its filing. But the iPhone maker has contended that it needs to examine the source code for all versions of the products in question in order to prepare … Read more

Crave giveaway: Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (16GB, Wi-Fi)

First, a big congrats to Felix C. of Parkville, Md., for winning a Grace Digital Audio Mondo in last week's giveaway. Felix beat out more than 1,300 other entrants to snag the Wi-Fi music player. Now, here's your chance to get a shiny, new gadget for free.

This week's Crave giveaway prize is the 16GB, Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. The Android Honeycomb tablet features an 8.9-inch touch screen with a 1,280x800-pixel resolution and comes with a 1GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, a front-facing 2-megapixel camera, and a rear-facing 3-megapixel camera.

It's pretty much a more compact version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but as CNET Senior Editor Donald Bell points out in his review, the smaller design in many ways eases the user experience. … Read more

New iPad doesn't blow me away, and it doesn't need to

commentary To anyone complaining that the new iPad isn't revolutionary enough: Who cares?

Apple's new iPad offers only a few key upgrades--things like an improved display, faster processor, better camera, and 4G LTE. Even the marquee feature of the iPhone 4S, Siri, didn't make its way to the new tablet.

Gadget enthusiasts and tech geeks are going to cry foul over the lack of any true innovation. Where's Siri? Where's the iPad Mini? Why no quad-core? But the truth is, Apple could have put nearly anything out and it would have still been massively successful. … Read more

Apple iPad with Retina Display and LTE makes its debut

Apple unveiled a new iPad today, resetting the goal line again even as competitors scramble to catch up in the burgeoning market for tablets.

The new iPad--not the "iPad HD" or "iPad 3" as previously rumored--offers a higher-resolution Retina Display similar to that of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It offers a resolution of 2,048x1,536--or 3.1 million pixels. It also features an updated processor--which the company boasted was four times as fast as the nearest competition--as well as a 4G connection.

Apple also cut the price of two models of the iPad 2 in an effort to stay competitive with lower-priced options.

The new iPad debuts at a time when rivals have flooded the market with competing tablets--with varying levels of success. A year ago, Apple had essentially lapped most of the competition when it launched the second iteration of its iPad, allowing it to dominate the market.

A year later, and it's a different scene.

Samsung's AllShare Play pushes pictures from phone to cloud and TV

Here at Samsung's product showcase in New York, multimedia connectivity played a big role. The company talked up its rebranded AllShare Play technology, not to be confused with Google Play, which was previously called AllShare.

Essentially AllShare Play allows owners of Samsung tablets and smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Tabs and Galaxy Nexus devices for instance, to push media files such as pictures to servers in the cloud. Samsung says it will save up to 5GB of data for users of the free AllShare Play service. … Read more

iPad 3 on 30 percent of users' shopping lists, poll finds

Eyeing an iPad 3? Then you're certainly not alone.

Almost one-third of mobile users surveyed by InMobi said they plan to buy Apple's next iPad. And 44 percent said they would consider only an iPad were they to buy a tablet.

Drilling down further, more than half of the people aiming to buy the iPad 3 don't currently own a tablet. But 65 percent would opt for an iPad or iPad 2 at a reduced price, a sign to InMobi that buzz over the iPad 3 will likely help sales of the earlier generation models.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 arrives March 1 on Verizon

Back in January during CES (yeah, with all this Mobile World Congress stuff, it can be hard to remember), Samsung announced its tablet, the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

We liked the initial look and feel of the device, and if you're interested in purchasing one, it will be available this Thursday, March 1, on Verizon's 4G LTE network.

As CNET's Stephen Shankland reported, the Galaxy Tab's 7.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display uses "active matrix organic light-emitting diode technology." Combine that with a 1,280x800-pixel resolution, and it's easy to expect that graphics and videos will be bright, clear, and vibrant.… Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 hands-on (video, photos)

BARCELONA, Spain--Samsung's tablet spotlight is on the flashy Galaxy Note 10.1 this Mobile World Congress, but after putting down the stylus, I picked up both new versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

If you've ever seen the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, you'll find similar-looking devices, with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich preinstalled. Instead of making these tablets top of the line, Samsung says it'll introduce them at lower price points than the original, in an effort to compete with dedicated e-readers.

Both devices were on display at … Read more

How to view open Android Chrome Beta tabs in Chrome desktop

When Chrome Beta for Android launched, my biggest complaint was the fact that open tabs on my Android device didn't sync back to Chrome desktop. The sync from the desktop to Android device worked great, but when I wanted to view open tabs from my Android device in the desktop client, they were nowhere to be found.

Thanks to a savvy Twitter follower, I now have a way to access my Chrome Beta tabs on the desktop. And while it's not as clean of an implementation as one would hope, it'll do for now.

BARCELONA, Spain--There are no secrets with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, the successor to the original 7-inch tablet family that Samsung unveiled last year. This Mobile World Congress brings not only a 7-inch version of the Tab 2, but an update to today's 10.1-inch model as well.

Both tablet sizes will feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1GHz dual-core processor, and two cameras, in addition to the usual scoop of Samsung's apps and hubs. While 3G-capable, there will also be Wi-Fi-only versions.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Tab 2 series in March, beginning with the … Read more
