Microsoft's tasty new search interface: Tafiti

Microsoft just released Tafiti, a Silverlight- and Live Search-powered search engine experiment. TechCrunch asks the question that matters: Will people use it? Their answer: Probably not.

But it's worth checking out, because beneath its glitzy user interface are some cool experiments that could easily be implemented on a more plain-Jane search site. I like the "shelf" on Tafiti, where you can drag search results that you want to save or look at later. And I like the stack of search queries that Tafiti collects as you use the site; other engines record your search histories, … Read more

Silverlight

Category: Publishing

Silverlight is a framework for providing rich applications to the Internet browser. It's a direct competitor to Adobe's Flash, the popular format that powers most of the video we see on the Internet. Silverlight supports the display of high-definition video files and, importantly, Silverlight's creator, Microsoft, will do the heavy lifting of sending them over the Net.

Silverlight apps will run on both major Windows browsers as well as on Safari and Firefox on a Mac. We're already starting to see some pretty good-looking Silverlight Web applications crop up, although the platform is both … Read more

People can drag and drop icons that do things like display photos from Flickr in a photo gallery. Or they can combine these blocks to display photos tagged with the word &… Read more

What is Silverlight, really?

Microsoft's Silverlight technology, launched at the NAB conference two weeks ago and pitched hard to developers at the Mix '07 conference this week, is being taken as a competitor to Adobe's Flash. Since it is a framework for providing rich applications to the Internet browser, it is indeed that. But though Silverlight and Flash are competing technologies, Microsoft's offering is different from Adobe's in key ways.

More than just a platform

Silverlight is being pushed side-by-side with Microsoft's Live services for developers. Microsoft is opening up APIs (application program interfaces) for its search engine, for … Read more
