Mitsubishi 65-inch laser-based TV will be $7K

This blog has been updated to correctly reflect the price of Pioneer's 60-inch plasma.

It's been two years since Mitsubishi first began talking about its laser-based TV. Finally, we have a price.

It looks like the 65-inch LaserVue will retail for $6,999, and will start shipping at the end of September with wider release scheduled for later in October, Sound & Vision reports.

At that price and size, the LaserVue places it pretty much in the same realm as its plasma and LCD peers. Pioneer's 60-inch Kuro plasma, which is generally regarded to have the best … Read more

Mitsubishi to make a wireless HDTV

Mitsubishi will be joining the rarefied ranks (in TV anyway) of Sony and Samsung in offering wireless television.

Wireless chipmaker Amimon is set to announce Thursday that Mitsubishi will use its technology to send high-definition TV signals to its latest LCD TV without wires. It will come in 40-inch and 46-inch sizes. The 40-inch model will cost 300,000 yen (or $2,731), and the 46-inch model will sell for 400,000 yen ($3,642).

Mitsubishi's TV will have the chips embedded in the TV, and will come with a separate receiver unit that can send and receive uncompressed … Read more

Mitsubishi plans plant to meet battery demand

TOKYO--The race for lithium ion batteries is heating up, with Mitsubishi Motors saying it will build a plant to meet an expected fivefold increase in demand.

The factory will open after April 2009 and have an initial output of 200,000 battery cells a year, or enough for 2,000 cars. Mitsubishi will ramp up capacity to equip 10,000 vehicles "shortly afterward," amid higher hopes for its i MiEV electric vehicle, the company said in a statement.

Mitsubishi's new factory will be operated by Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture with GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi. It will be in the western prefecture of Shiga.

Plans had called for GS Yuasa to make the batteries at an existing plant in Kyoto, with annual output for 1,000 vehicles. But the partners decided that a bigger plant was needed to meet growing demand.

Mitsubishi to bring i MiEV electric vehicle stateside

Mitsubishi is partnering with California utility companies Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison to bring the oddly named i MiEV electric vehicle to the Golden State. Here's the catch: you won't even be given the option to purchase one. The vehicle, which is based on Mitsubishi's "i" gasoline-powered mini car on sale in Japan, is being imported in limited quantities for testing purposes only and will not be available for public purchase.

A 330-volt lithium ion battery system, located under the floor deck, powers a permanent magnet electric motor. The 47-kW electric motor … Read more

Is there anything the Mitsubishi Lancer can't do?

Mitsubishi announced today that it will enter a modified Lancer in next year's Dakar rally, the legendary grueling race through Africa. The base model Lancer is a small economy car with not much pep but a good cabin tech package, seemingly a poor platform for this tough race. However, Mitsubishi has been proving for years with the Lancer Evo, a heavily modified version of the car, that it can win World Rally Car races. The newest version, the Evo X, impressed the heck out of us on the track at Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., earlier this year. Mitsubishi … Read more

Mitsubishi brings 3D to HDTV

Our entertainment systems have evolved from black and white to color, from fuzzy 480i to ultraclear 1080p, from mono to 7.1 surround sound, from Sony's Betamax to Sony's Blu-ray--what's next you might say? With Mitsubishi's latest line of televisions, the company has stuck out its leg into the elusive realm of 3D; that is, 3D with the glasses and stereoscopic display.

You'll notice from the image above that Mitsubishi's display isn't using the traditional 3D headgear. Old '50s era black-and-white movies used what's called an anaglyph display, which simply means … Read more
