Rumor redux: Return of the iPod Nano camera

Last we month we reported on Taiwanese Mac Blog Apple.pro showing a "spy" pic of a next-generation iPod Nano case that had a hole reserved for a camera. Well, Apple.pro has posted a new Nano spy pic that again strongly hints at Apple bringing image and video capture back to the Nano. We have no way to confirm any of this, but according to the site, the integrated camera will have a 1.3-megapixel image sensor.

As previously noted, some people were disappointed when Apple chose to shrink the iPod Nano, give it a smaller 1.… Read more

Eton's Soulra gets XL sizing

Last year we reviewed Eton's Soulra solar-powered portable iPod/iPhone speaker. Well, the company is now about to ship the Soulra's big brother, the Soulra XL.

Featuring a extra large, retractable 72 square-inch "enhanced" monocrystal solar panel, the 7-pound Soulra XL has a built-in 2000mAh rechargeable lithium ion battery. The company says it will run for five hours of continuous play (as long as it has some sun to soak up) and has eight speaker drivers and 22W output, which will fill a good-size room or patio space with sound.

Eton's taking preorders on the $… Read more

Swiveling iPhone 4 case's swell design

Got an e-mail from Greg at a start-up called Mycase, which is building new protective cases for the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

He wrote:

Hello, David. I would like to introduce CNET with my new Swivel product line from mycase. Please visit my Web site at www.mycase.us. I believe that we have the most unique and coolest iPhone 4 protective case, and I hope you will have some interest after looking at our Web site.

Well, I went and took a look and though it may not be the coolest iPhone 4 case I've ever seen, The Swivel does have an intriguing design that allows you to swivel the retractable integrated kickstand into positions that allow you to prop your iPhone up horizontally or vertically. I would like to see something like this for the iPad 2, so get on it, Greg! (Note: An iPad 2 version is listed under the "coming soon" products on the site, along with versions for other smartphones and tablets.) … Read more

What tablets can learn from the iPod wars

The iPad is to tablets what the iPod was to MP3 players. I think that's safe to say now, right? I mean, here we are again with Apple churning out a runaway hit that defies logical, practical buying habits and ranks up there with cultural phenomena like Beanie Babies and Snuggies.

Still, when I hear people compare the iPad's success with the iPod's, something doesn't sit quite right with me. As someone who lived through the iPod wars and spent an unhealthy amount of time analyzing them, I feel obligated to drill past the superficial similarities of the iPod and iPad eras, and really see if they're as similar as we think.

So let's take a trip down memory lane, look at the iPod wars for what they really were, and see if history is really repeating itself.

The windup

As many of you know, Apple wasn't the first company to make an MP3 player or a tablet. By the time the iPod came on the scene in 2001, products like the MPman had already been on the market for three years. The market was small, though, and only early adopters and die-hard music nuts were scooping them up. To Apple's credit, it was the first large company to really step into the MP3 player space (far ahead of its biggest competitor at the time, Microsoft).

When the iPod arrived, it didn't offer the most features or the best price, but it did include what was then an enviable 5GB capacity. It also featured a design that was so unlike anything else out there (including portable CD players, which still defined the era), that it felt like some precious gift from the future.… Read more

Etymotic ER-4PT review: 'Very accurate' earphones

First, a bit of clarification. In case you didn't realize it, Etymotic has four versions of its ER-4 MicroPro series earphones, each of which retails for $299. We're not going to overwhelm you with all the details of each model, but Etymotic say the ER-4PT, which delivers excellent sound with very accurate tonal balance, is made for "the professional traveler who uses his or her earphones on planes as well as professionally."

The first thing you'll notice about these Etymotics is that the earphones themselves are somewhat long, slender cylinders that make you feel as … Read more

Next iPod Nano to get camera?

Some people were disappointed when Apple chose to shrink the iPod Nano, give it a smaller 1.5-inch multitouch display, and lose the built-in video camera. Well, if this photo from the Taiwanese Mac Blog Apple.pro--which has been fairly reliable with Apple "spy" pics in the past--is any indication, Apple may be bringing the camera back while retaining the current-generation Nano's tiny form factor.

It would be interesting to speculate how you'd shoot with such a small camera, but one obvious method would be to clip it on lapel-style, turning the Nano into sort … Read more

iSkin clears things up with iPhone 4 and iPod Touch Claro cases

iSkin is known for its colorful iPhone cases, but this go-round it's taking the color out of the case and going completely translucent.

The new case is called the Claro and its selling point is that it fuses a layer of a premium soft polymer with a clear hard plastic, so you end up with a case that's ultraclear but has some grip to it (and is more scratch resistant). The Claro for iPhone 4 features an integrated camera ring that iSkin says eliminates flash glare when taking photos, while the Claro Touch features an integrated 30-pin port … Read more

Get an 8GB iPod Touch and 4.3-inch GPS for $204.99

I apologize in advance if this deal sells out before your Cheapskate e-mail arrives, but, hey, that's why I've routinely advised people to visit the site in the a.m. rather than waiting on the e-mail.

Anyway. Best Buy is offering the current-generation 8GB iPod Touch and an Insignia NAV01 4.3-inch GPS for $204.99, plus sales tax and $6 for shipping. That's about $25 less than you'd normally pay for the iPod alone. Both items are new, not refurbished.

Ay caramba! That's one seriously sweet bundle--which is why I suspect it will sell … Read more

Hands on with Samsung's Android-based Galaxy Players

Call them what you will. Android-based ultramobile devices. Mini tablets. Jumbo iPod Touches. Or Android smartphones without the phone.

Whatever they are, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Players, which come in 4- and 5-inch screen sizes and don't have price tags or release dates yet, are intriguing.

Samsung casually unveiled the Galaxy Players at its 2011 product preview at the Samsung Experience showroom in New York on Wednesday. They're essentially mini versions of the Galaxy Tab, running on the same 1GHz processors and featuring front and rear cameras (the 5-inch model has a flash), microSD expansion ports, Wi-Fi (802.… Read more
