Apple iOS 5.1: First Take

Just before it unveiled the new iPad at a media event in San Francisco today, Apple announced that iOS 5.1, the next update to the company's mobile operating system, is now available.

The list of new features isn't extensive and largely consists of bug fixes and interface tweaks. That said, there are a couple of useful additions. Here are the highlights that Apple has listed in iOS 5.1's documentation.

A Japanese Siri This was the only feature of iOS 5.1 that Apple CEO Tim Cook specifically mentioned during his time onstage. Siri, the voice … Read more

New iPad eyed by 42 percent of current owners surveyed

Though not yet out, the new iPad has already won over a healthy chunk of current iPad owners.

A full 42 percent of existing iPad owners said they'll buy the iPad 3, aka iPad HD, when it's released, according to a recent PriceGrabber survey. Among all the people surveyed by the site, 22 percent already own a tablet, and out of those, 52 percent own an iPad.

Conducted between February 23 and March 2, PriceGrabber's survey reached from 1,829 online shoppers in the U.S.

With new iPad looming, Barclays rates Apple a $710 stock

Whether the new device expected today from Apple is called the iPad 3 or the iPad HD -- or the End All and Be All in the History of Techdom -- Barclays Capital has raised its target on Apple's stock to $710 from $630.

Interestingly, the upgrade note, authored by Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes, focused more on the potential contribution of iPhone 4S sales to Apple's bottom line than on the promise inherent in the company's tablets.

Noting "solid momentum" through the calendar first quarter, Reitzes wrote that iPhone 4S sales "seem to be … Read more

Is Apple eyeing a 7.1-inch iPad?

Rumors have bounced around the past few months that Apple is readying a smaller version of its iPad. Now one report is pegging the actual size at 7.1 inches.

Apple is said to be buying screen parts for the tinier tablet, which is being slated for a possible launch later this year, according to inside information received by VentureBeat. If true, the intel differs slightly from recent reports claiming that an iPad mini would sport a 7.85-inch screen.

In the more immediate future, Apple is holding an iPad-related event today that's expected to bring the iPad 3.… Read more

Will the iPad 3's display let you 'feel' what's on-screen?

When you scroll around the iPad 2 with your finger, all you feel is a screen. But what if you had the chance to actually feel all the things you're seeing?

According to U.K. tech blog Pocket-lint, you might just have that chance with the new iPad 3. The blog reported today that it spoke with a company spokesman at haptic-feedback firm Senseg, who said that the firm "won't be making any statements until after Apple's announcement." It wasn't necessarily a smoking gun, but Pocket-lint believes that it was enough to suggest Senseg's technology will be coming to the iPad 3.… Read more

Verizon installing LTE equipment in Apple stores for next iPad?

A new report is adding more fuel to rumors that Apple has bundled Long Term Evolution tech into the next iPad for speedier data transfer.

Citing sources, Apple blog AppleInsider reported last night that Verizon has sent employees into Apple Store locations to install 4G LTE. That report followed another from Cult of Mac, which claimed Verizon workers have been adding LTE support to Apple stores "over the last couple...days."

iPad HD will surpass laptops on key features

With the iPad HD, it will become crystal clear why Apple's tablet is the fastest growing "PC" segment.

The iPad HD, aka iPad 3, is expected to have:

Eye-popping 2048x1536 display (versus the iPad 2's 1024x768) 4G via Verizon's LTE Faster graphics silicon, among other chip enhancements

And all in roughly the same extremely portable package of the iPad 2.

Let's see. Neither the newest MacBook Air nor new Intel ultraportable laptops can boast that kind of display resolution and none offer a standard model with built-in broadband--and certainly not the LTE variety of … Read more
