U.S. Judge: Samsung's tablets infringe on Apple patents

A U.S. district judge in Northern California said today that Samsung's line of Galaxy tablets infringe on Apple's patents, while adding that Apple still has to show that those patents are valid under the law.

Reuters, which followed the court hearing, notes that the comments came as part of request by Apple to get an injunction against Samsung's tablets in the U.S., and that a formal order on whether Samsung infringes on an Apple utility patent will be issued "fairly promptly."

Reuters notes that Apple still needs to demonstrate to the court that … Read more

Apple wins injunction against Samsung in Australia

Apple won an interlocutory injunction Thursday by the Federal Court of Australia against Samsung and its Galaxy Tab 10.1, which will see the product held off Australian shelves until a full patent case can be heard.

Justice Annabelle Bennett read from a summary judgment text in Sydney, saying she had evenly weighed the balance of convenience to determine which party would be most inconvenienced by a judgment made either way.

Bennett said that if the Tab 10.1 were in fact released while a full patent case was prepared, the damage to Apple would be significant. Likewise, if the … Read more

Polycom brings videoconferencing to iPad, Android tablets

Polycom today unveiled a new videoconferencing application, RealPresence Mobile, that will run on the iPad 2 and Android tablets.

The app runs on Polycom's RealPresence platform, which runs its standard videoconferencing rooms and terminals that include larger high-definition televisions and speaker systems. The idea is to encourage even more videoconferencing use by enabling the tablets to talk with the larger videoconference rooms.

Polycom is looking to play a bigger part in the white-hot mobile space, branching out from the videoconferencing rooms and audio equipment that make up its bread-and-butter business. Its main rival, Cisco Systems, has a number of … Read more

T-Mobile touts two 4G Android tablets: SpringBoard, Galaxy Tab

The U.S. carrier T-Mobile announced plans today to sell to two Android tablets with 4G networking abilities in coming weeks, its own 7-inch SpringBoard and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Each will come with the newest version of Google's tablet-oriented Honeycomb incarnation of the Android operating system, version 3.2, and will go on sale "in time for the holidays," the company said.

Samsung's 10.1-inch tablet first debuted months ago, but without 4G networking abilities. It's at the heart of a swirling collection of patent infringement lawsuits with Apple, whose iOS-powered iPad … Read more

Ruling on Apple-Samsung spat in Australia coming next week?

Apple will need to wait until Monday at the very earliest to hear whether its request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be granted in Australia, a new report claims.

According to Reuters, Judge Annabelle Bennett promised a quick decision on the case after lawyers for Apple and Samsung completed their arguments in the Australian federal court earlier this week. Although the attorneys expected a decision today, it appears now that Bennett will use the weekend before making a final determination on the matter.

Apple and Samsung have been locked in a bitter patent … Read more

Leaked T-Mobile roadmap reveals Android galore

T-Mobile's fall roadmap landed online earlier this week, tipping the carrier's device plans for October and November. Judging by the look of things, T-Mobile is betting heavily on Android for smartphones and tablets as the fourth quarter gets underway.

Two of the handsets listed, the HTC Amaze 4G and Samsung Galaxy S II, were recently announced by T-Mobile and will be available on October 12. According to the roadmap, there will be a third smartphone arriving a few days later on October 19 in the form of a Huawei "Wayne." Considering the $99 price (with contract), … Read more

Apple rejects Samsung's settlement offer in Australia

Apple has rejected a settlement offer from Samsung Electronics that would have allowed the consumer electronics maker to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia.

Apple, which claims Samsung's products copy the look and feel of the technology used in its products, told a federal court in Sydney on Tuesday that the settlement offer had no basis, according to a Reuters report.

"It is one we don't accept and there is no surprise," Apple attorney Steven Burley told the court. "The main reason we are here is to prevent the launch and maintain the … Read more

Amazon, RIM tablets look alike--that's where it ends

The Kindle Fire looks strikingly like the poor-selling liquidation-prone tablet from RIM. But that won't stop the Fire from flying out of Amazon's warehouses.

Analysts I talked to this week have a common forecast. Amazon will sell millions of the Kindle Fire tablet soon after it becomes available on November 15. Easily beating other Android tablet rivals in sales volume. And crushing its doppelganger, RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook.

In fact, the only thing possibly holding back Amazon from selling 4 million tablets (the high end of analysts' forecasts) in the months after the Fire becomes available is component … Read more

Samsung unveils Android-based Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

Samsung has made the somewhat surprising decision to unveil yet another tablet to bolster its line.

Dubbed the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the Android 3.2 (Honeycomb)-based tablet comes with a 7-inch display and 1.2GHz dual-core processor. In addition to 802.11n wireless support, owners will also be able to connect to HSPA+ networks from the device. On the storage side, customers will be able to choose from 16GB and 32GB variants, and a microSD slot offers the ability to add up to 32GB of additional storage to the tablet.

Samsung's decision to announce a new 7-inch Galaxy Tab comes as a bit of a surprise, since the company already has a 7-inch tablet that it launched last year. Earlier this month, the company showed off a 7.7-inch tablet, alongside an 8.9-inch option. Samsung also sells a 10.1-inch tablet. Considering it had nearly all form factors covered, who'd have thought that Samsung would need a fourth option to offer customers?… Read more
