Ex-Facebook exec takes helm at Project Playlist

There's finally an end to the speculation over what former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta would do next: he's taken the job as CEO of a site called Project Playlist, according to Kara Swisher of AllThingsD.

He had already been an investor in the music discovery company, and there have been blog-circulated rumor about his new gig for several weeks now.

The move comes shortly after Van Natta withdrew his offer to take the CEO position at MySpace's new music venture. All signs now point to MTV exec Courtney Holt to take that job, but no formal … Read more

Apple released an update on Monday for iLife 8.0 and Aperture 2 running on Mac OS v10.4.9 through v10.4.11.

Featured Freeware: Wrapper

Easily combine executables, Registry changes, and commands into a single, tight, executable with this simple freeware. Wrapper's deceptively basic interface resembles nothing more than a generic spreadsheet app. As it doesn't need to be installed, the program is easy to add to a USB toolkit. This is a program for those comfortable with constructing potentially damaging executables.

Though it builds a flowchart of commands, operating Wrapper is not a linear process. Users choose to build projects, or lists of applications, commands, or Registry changes to invoke. The app uses simple press-a-button functionality to add a line to the … Read more

MySpace Music has offered its vacant CEO position to Courtney Holt, MTV Networks' executive vice president of digital music and media, according to a music industry source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The source said that Holt, previously an executive at Interscope Records, may be close to agreeing to the deal but that there are several sticking points.

The News Corp.-owned MySpace launched its music service last month, featuring streaming-music deals from all four major record labels and a retail affiliate partnership with the Amazon MP3 store.

In September, shortly before MySpace Music launched, reports indicated that the CEO … Read more

Now on Facebook: The Zuckerblog?

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rarely writes for the company blog, typically taking a byline only when the company is doing some damage control. But on Thursday, the young executive penned a post for the Facebook Blog about his recent trip to Europe, which included a speaking engagement at the Future of Web Apps conference in London.

There's nothing ground-breaking in the post, titled "Hello from Madrid." But considering Zuckerberg is known for keeping to himself, a mild irony for the young fellow who facilitated the sharing of ten billion photos and a cascade of personal … Read more

'BusinessWeek' names the Web's top 25

Thank goodness. BusinessWeek's new 25 Most Influential People on the Web list is refreshingly free of blowhard bloggers, busty video babes, and those wacky people who don't seem to do anything except speak at conference after conference.

Most of the list, rather, consists of the really big guys: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch, whose company acquired MySpace. Then there are legit Web pioneers like Digg founder Kevin Rose, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, and Craigslist founder Craig Newmark.

Because of the dominance of big names, it's a pretty unsurprising … Read more
