AT&T ladles out GetJar apps--iPhone excluded

GetJar's mobile app store is now available in AT&T's AppCenter.

Upon downloading the application, AT&T customers can access the company's more than 75,000 applications. GetJar's store has several top titles, led by internationally beloved game, Angry Birds. GetJar also added the Shazam music app to its service yesterday. Apps downloaded from GetJar can be delivered to devices running Symbian, Android, and RIM's BlackBerry OS, among others.

One in five to switch to prepaid mobile service

Millions of wireless customers are planning to switch to prepaid service, a new study conducted by Infogroup/ORC has found.

According to the company, which conducted its study for the New Millennium Research Council, 20 percent of wireless customers (estimated to be about 24.6 million adults in the U.S.) will move to "less expensive unlimited prepaid wireless service with no early-cancellation penalty" at some point within the next six months. An additional 10 percent of respondents said they would switch to a prepaid plan if they weren't "subject to an early-cancellation penalty."

T-Mobile USA endured a somewhat disappointing third quarter.

In the quarter, the wireless carrier generated $5.35 billion in revenue, representing a slight decline from the $5.38 billion it tallied during the same period in 2009. T-Mobile's profit in the most recent quarter was $320 million, down from $417 million a year ago.

AT&T activates 5.2 million iPhones in 3rd quarter

Apple's iPhone continues to be a big winner for AT&T.

In announcing its third-quarter earnings today, AT&T said that it activated more than 8 million smartphones over the past quarter, and a hefty 5.2 million of those devices were iPhones--"the most iPhone activations ever in a quarter," the carrier said. During the second quarter of 2010, AT&T activated 3.2 million iPhones.

AT&T ups early-upgrade fee to smartphones

Those hoping to upgrade to an AT&T smartphone early, beware: the company has raised the price for doing so by $125.

When AT&T customers attempt to upgrade their mobile phone to a new smartphone less than 18 months into their current two-year contract, they will now be leveled with a $200 charge. Previously, AT&T charged customers $75 for an early upgrade to a smartphone. The iPhone is an exception to the new rule.

AT&T introduces first LTE, HSPA+ devices

SAN FRANCISCO--They're not phones, but AT&T has announced its first HSPA+ and LTE-compatible devices: the USBConnect Adrenaline and USBConnect Shockwave mobile broadband modems.

The Adrenaline, which is made by LG, will be the first LTE-upgradeable device. A software update will be made available for the USB modem when AT&T rolls out LTE in mid-2011, which will allow it take advantage of the faster speeds. Till then, you can use it on AT&T's current 3G network.

AT&T improves service security with encryption

In an attempt to improve call security on its network, AT&T has added two-factor encryption, the company announced today.

According to AT&T, its encryption service, called Encrypted Mobile Voice, is powered by two products: the KoolSpan TrustChip and SRA International's One Vault Voice. KoolSpan's TrustChip is inserted into a smartphone's microSD slot. With it installed, users are able to place encrypted calls.
