That's one of the details from "Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Greatest Products," a new unauthorized biography about Apple's designer in chief that hit stores today. It's chock-full of tidbits about the designer, but many of the interesting insights revolve around the details and personality of Apple's notoriously secretive industrial design group.
The reason behind iOS 7 defaulting to minute increments for calendar appointments is beyond me. Have you ever scheduled a meeting for 8:03? I know I haven't.
In previous versions of iOS, the calendar would increment by 5 minutes, which makes a lot more sense. As it turns out, iOS 7 offers the same functionality, you just need to change a simple -- but hidden -- setting.
As WonderHowTo pointed out, a quick double-tap on the minute column when adding an appointment will change it from 1 to 5 minutes.
Sadly, the change doesn't remain in place; … Read more
This comes the same day the company introduced new versions of the iBooks and iTunes U software their look and feel in line with the rest of iOS 7. Notably, iBooks has lost its oft-criticized wooden shelf motif, the kind of real-world software design flourish championed by former head of iOS Scott Forstall.
On Thursday, though, Apple released a beta update for iWork for iCloud that includes the features. Among the new tools that let multiple people work together on a project: you can see a list of who is currently working on the project, and each person's individual cursor; and you … Read more
Apple might be the next retailer to open its stores on Thanksgiving Day.
The company is planning to have some of its retail stores open on Thanksgiving, ifoAppleStore reported Thursday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of its plans. Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York City, as well as its retail locations in San Francisco, San Diego, and Miami, among others, will be open on the holiday, the store-tracking site claims.
Apple has in the past opened its doors on Thanksgiving in just a couple of locations. This year's list could grow considerably, as other retailers, … Read more
Apple device users who are frustrated when Siri fails to answer a question may one day be able tap into the crowd to get a better response.
The Apple patent application "Crowd sourcing information to fulfill user requests," published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, envisions a few ways to help Siri when it comes up empty.
Siri typically relies on such sites as Bing, Yelp, and WolframAlpha to gather the data needed to answer a question. But sometimes those sources aren't equipped to provide an accurate response, especially if the question itself is phrased … Read more
A new iPad Mini tracker has been launched by a surprising source.
SeaTurtle.org, which devotes most of its pages to the protection of sea turtles, can now tell you where to find one of the new iPad Minis. The site's iDevice Availability Notifier displays a grid of Apple stores listed alphabetically by state. The grid reveals which model Minis are available in which stores.
The page shows all of the Retina iPad Mini models from all carriers and in all capacities. A green cell means the tablet was in stock as of the last check, while a red … Read more
Windows Phone continues to eke out gains in a landscape dominated by Android and iOS.
During the third quarter, Microsoft's mobile OS share rose to 3.6 percent globally from 2.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, Gartner said in a report on Thursday. Shipments grew to 8.9 million from 3.9 million over the same period. Though Android's market share surged to more than 80 percent, Gartner dubbed Microsoft the winner of the quarter, with a gain in shipments of 123 percent.
Microsoft's decision to buy Nokia's devices and services business is also seen … Read more
Otterbox is by far the dominant force in iPhone cases, according to a new study, but Apple is starting to make inroads.
Otterbox, which makes a wide array of cases for mobile products, owns more than 50 percent of the iPhone 4S case market, according to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). And while the company is still holding the biggest share for individual firms in the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S market, Apple's cases are likely an increasingly worrisome presence for the case-maker.
According to CIRP, Apple's iPhone 5C cases account for nearly 10 percent … Read more
It's the big screens on the phones, right?
Or if it isn't that, it's the sheer scale of the operation.
Maybe it's simply the very funny ads that make Apple cult members look like, well, tools of the establishment. One Samsung executive was recently moved to declare that bashing Apple works.
Each element, in its way, might describe a part of why Samsung has made such significant inroads into Apple's consciousness.
But, when asked at the Business Insider Ignition conference what it was that drove the company to its heights, David Eun, executive vice president … Read more
