AT&T, Clearwire, HP, and others join LTE patent pool

A group of wireless-industry companies -- including AT&T, Clearwire, and HP -- have agreed to a patent pool that could mean fewer lawsuits over the use of LTE technology, Via Licensing Corporation announced today.

The technology-licensing company said it hopes more companies will join the program. In addition to AT&T, Clearwire, and HP, the initial companies contributing their patents to the pool are DTVG Licensing, KDDI, NTT DoCoMo, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and ZTE.

The LTE patents are so-called "frand," or standard-essential patents, which are technologies required to be licensed on "fair, … Read more

Tablet Tuesday: Get a 32GB Motorola Xoom with 4G for $219.99

The iPad may be horrendously overpriced compared with other tablets on the market (and I suspect the rumored iPad Mini will be as well), but it does offer an option found on few Android-powered competitors: 4G LTE.

I mean, look at the most popular Android tablets -- the Kindle Fire, the Nook, the Google Nexus. They offer only Wi-Fi connectivity. You can get 3G on a couple models (like the Samsung Galaxy Tab), but 4G is rarer still.

Cut to today's deal: while supplies last, Ice Monkey has the refurbished Motorola Xoom 10.1 32GB Wi-Fi + 4G LTE tablet for $219.99 shipped.… Read more

Samsung makes good on threat of patent suit against iPhone 5

Fresh off a courtroom victory against Apple today, Samsung filed another legal salvo against its chief foe.

The Korean electronics giant submitted an amendment to a lawsuit originally filed in April against Apple, adding the iPhone 5 to a list of devices that includes the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the new iPad that Samsung accuses of infringing on several Samsung patents.

Samsung reportedly threatened to sue Apple last month for patent infringement over its then rumored use of long-term evolution (LTE) connectivity in the next-generation smartphone. While the new iPhone's debut last month confirmed that Apple'… Read more

Prizefight: Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3

This is a Prizefight throwdown showdown between Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S3, before the Jelly Bean update, that will continue on for generations to come.

The iPhone 5 finally has caught up to technologies that the Android world has had for more than a year, so how will it match up with one of Android's crown jewels, the Galaxy S3?

You can bet we'll be pitting these two against each other after the Jelly Bean update, but you can't have a better matchup than this. There's no way to go wrong with … Read more

Data speeds: iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 4S

Though its thinner profile and longer screen are two of the iPhone 5's top draws, I'm more interested in what's inside Apple's newest handset. Yes, after a long wait, the iPhone 5 finally adds support for 4G LTE data networks. Of course, I have to point out that a galaxy of Android phones (get it!) have long offered the feature, but that doesn't mean I'm not grateful that at long last the iPhone has caught up.

Sprint may boost plan prices when LTE network gets stronger

Sprint Nextel has been rolling out its high-speed LTE network, but the faster network could come with a downside for customers -- higher prices.

Chief Executive Dan Hesse, speaking at an analyst conference today, said Sprint may consider raising prices once it has made more progress with its 4G LTE network upgrade. The company lags Verizon Wireless and AT&T in building out the high-speed network, something that could limit its attraction to customers.

"We have a competitive disadvantage in terms of LTE footprint," Hesse said. "You don't increase your price when you have a … Read more
