iSee DVD Creator Review

Most DVD players don't have DVD burners the way they have CD burners. iSee DVD Creator will help you put media onto a DVD, but it's not for rookie users. The program's creation process is not too great. Worse, it's not nearly as smooth as competing DVD-burning software.

The program only gives you a quick sample of a few minutes if you haven't paid. The program doesn't welcome you with open arms, as many of the features you want to experiment with have to be done in a specific order to work. During testing, … Read more

Create disk images with Free ISO Creator

Unlike zipping files, creating compressed ISO archives isn't as easy as a simple right click. Free ISO Creator is a solid tool to help you turn multiple files into a writable ISO image file. The program does exactly what it says it will. However, it's not the easiest or most customizable creation software you'll ever use.

The program gains major points just for being free. There aren't many similar programs that can say the same. However, there are a good deal of things missing that might be available in a paid program. Free ISO Creator is … Read more

Discounted Windows 8 hybrids earn a second look

Microsoft's official online store has cut prices on a handful of Window 8 devices. These systems, from HP, Toshiba, and others, are all different, but each straddles the line between laptop and tablet and falls into the growing hybrid category; you can see the current discounts on the Microsoft Store site.

With these new discounts (no word on if they are temporary or permanent), our initial reviews of these specific systems deserve a second look, if only because a big knock against each one was the unrealistic asking price.

Are they much better machines at $100 to $250 off, … Read more

The Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 looks damn impressive, but it's a handful to drive

Piloting the 2013 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Special Edition in heavy traffic on a damp road, I began to list all the other cars I would rather be driving at that moment. The Challenger looks good and justifies its retro-muscle-car status with a massive engine, but wouldn't be my first choice for making a quick trip out to the grocery store.

The 392 badges on the fenders make a historical reference to an earlier version of Dodge's Hemi engine and recall a time when we used cubic inches instead of metric liters to measure engine displacement. However, those … Read more

Create customs disc covers with Disc Cover for Mac

Those users who create many DVDs or other media need the ability to create labels to suit their needs. Disc Cover for Mac allows users to apply custom graphics and create labels for their discs in a well-designed package.

Disc Cover for Mac installs quickly and is very easy to set up. Included with the installer was a file with basic introductions and requirements for the program, as well as a lengthy user agreement. The program is available as a free trial version, with a payment of $34.95 required for the full version and removal of a watermark on … Read more

Pictures of possible early Nokia Lumia 950 leaked

Could this be one of the next Nokia Lumias that'll be hitting the market soon?

According to Windows Phone Central, the above image may be a picture of an early (and rather drab) prototype model of the Lumia 950.

The site further goes on to note that its possible specs include an AMOLED touch screen with a 1,280x768-pixel resolution, 2GB of RAM, and an extended battery life.

We here at CNET have to throw our hats in and say that this photo looks like a no-go. And personally, I think it looks more like a midlevel LG Optimus … Read more

Windows Blue poised to become Windows 8.1

Microsoft officials supposedly have decided on the final name for Windows Blue. The final decision, one of my sources told me, is that it will be Windows 8.1.

The client version of Blue, codenamed Windows Blue, is a refresh of Windows 8. It is expected to be released to manufacturing around August of this year. As I've blogged a few times, Microsoft is planning to position Blue as part of the Windows 8 wave, not as Windows 9.

On Twitter this morning Roman L. (a k a @AngelWZR) posted a screen shot of what appears to be a … Read more

Keep track of your to-do lists, notes, and other information with RightNote Portable

If you haven't found a way to wrangle all those little notes stuck to your monitor, RightNote Portable offers a solution that lets you add, organize, and search notes with nearly any type of information and keep them on your computer. While it certainly does more than the typical sticky note, it's also much more complicated than jotting down a note and placing it on your PC or workstation.

Initially, RightNote opens with a very busy interface packed with information about the program. It not only tells you what the product can do, but it also demonstrates the &… Read more

The wide world of Windows Phone 8 handsets (roundup)

Say "Windows Phone" and two handsets pop into my mind: Nokia's Lumia 920 and HTC's Windows Phone 8X, both released this past autumn.

But that's not it for Windows Phone. Nokia is especially fierce, announcing the inexpensive Lumia 520, which will land at T-Mobile, and the Lumia 720, which is destined for other shores.

Pair these budget handsets with Nokia's Lumia 620 and you'll start to see how Nokia, for one, is planning to take all echelons of its global marketplace by storm.

Yet even though Nokia is committed whole-hog to the Windows … Read more

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE comes to AT&T April 5

AT&T today announced the upcoming availability of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 LTE.

The connected tablet will sell for $399.99, and can be added onto Mobile Share plans, starting at $10 per month.

For those planning to hold onto the tablet for long-term, AT&T is knocking $150 off the price just so long as you commit to a two-year service agreement. Specifically, you get a $100 discount for signing the two-year contract, while an additional $50 comes back to you as a credit activation for tablets purchased in a retail store. The $249.… Read more
