Xbox continues to reign amidst weak video game market

The Xbox 360 scored its 15th month in a row as the top-selling gaming console, NPD reported yesterday.

With a 42 percent chunk of all console sales, Microsoft sold 371,000 Xbox 360 units last month. Total spending on Xbox hardware, software, and accessories hit $430 million, more than was spent on Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii combined.

Among the top 10 games last month, five of them were Xbox titles: Mass Effect 3, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, NBA 2K12, SSX, and Major League Baseball 2K12.

As usual, the rest of the video game industry was down … Read more

Crysis 3 surfaces on EA store

Crysis 3 has blown its cover. Electronic Arts' Origin.com has posted (and partially pulled) product pages for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of Crysis 3.

The product page for Crysis 3 shows a Nanosuit-wearing soldier wielding what appears to be an advanced bow and arrow set. The character stands in front of a city environment, hinting that the third entry will return to the urban setting of Crysis 2, instead of the original game's tropical locale.

The man behind your phone's fonts

No one outside the font world will recognize Steve Matteson. No one on the street will ever stop him and ask for an autograph, despite the fact that his designs are seen by millions of people around the world.

If you ever used Windows Vista, read off a Barnes & Noble Nook, or played a game on an Xbox, Matteson's work has already reached your eyes. Open a Word document in your computer and pull down the font menu. He is there -- nestled in Andale Mono, Cambria, and Curlz.

But it is his contributions to two mobile phone … Read more

Play ball! Here's your MLB 2012 gaming roundup

Spring is in the air so you know what that means: the start of the 2012 baseball season. It's also the time of year where two game developers are competing for your hard-earned cash. So what's the best baseball game to pick up this year?

That will all depend on which console you own. Those with a PlayStation 3 have a choice, either MLB 12: The Show or Major League Baseball 2K12. On the other hand, Xbox 360 owners are locked in to only one title to satisfy their baseball itch. Unfortunately for the latter, this year's best baseball game is exclusive to the PlayStation 3.… Read more

With pressure on, BioWare enhances Mass Effect 3 ending

BioWare announced today Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a downloadable content pack due this summer that adds cinematic sequences and epilogue to the arguably lackluster ending of the popular space-bound role-playing game.

To further sweeten the deal, BioWare will give away the enhanced Mass Effect 3 ending free to gamers on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 consoles until April 2014.

"The goal of the DLC is not to provide a new ending to the game, rather to offer fans additional context and answers to the end of Commander Shepard's story," a BioWare representative said in a blog post. … Read more

'I Am Alive' review: New survival game intense, but worth your time?

The game I Am Alive got a lot of attention during its development for its take on the post-apocalyptic action-survival genre. It's a game with a lot of innovative ideas and interesting twists on modern game mechanics, but none get the attention and growth they deserve.

The result is that many seem unable to decide what to make of the game. Receiving review scores like 4.5 from IGN and 8.0 from GameSpot, (a CBS Interactive property like CNET), I Am Alive seems to be a game that's very much what you make of it.… Read more

Next Xbox reportedly shipping with Blu-ray, not DVD

Although Microsoft has said the next Xbox won't be launching anytime soon, the rumor mill just won't quit.

Gaming blog VG247 is now reporting that Microsoft is hard at work on the next Xbox, and when it finally launches late next year, it'll come with a Blu-ray player. The device will also ship with two AMD GPUs, making it "like two PCs taped together," the blog's sources say.

Those reports aren't necessarily groundbreaking. AMD has hinted from time to time that it'll be Microsoft's partner in the next Xbox. Gaming blog … Read more

Microsoft ends German partnership over Motorola patent suits

Although many of the world's patent lawsuits have done little to change status quo, the bitter fight between Microsoft and Motorola Mobility is now impacting Germany's workers.

German news agency DPA reported today that Microsoft has ended its relationship with Arvato, which has provided logistics services for the software giant and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Germany-based Betelsmann. Microsoft will now relocate its logistics services to the Netherlands, according to the news agency. Dozens of jobs will be lost in the move.

DPA is reporting that Microsoft made the move for one reason: its legal troubles with … Read more

Turning in an old Xbox? Consider hard drive data, report says

Microsoft's Xbox 360 might not be protecting user data after the console is restored to factory settings, according to a new report.

In an interview with gaming blog Kotaku, Ashley Podhradsky, a researcher at Drexel University, said when Xbox 360 owners trade in their consoles after restoring the device to factory settings, their personal data might be left open to malicious hackers.

"Microsoft does a great job of protecting their proprietary information," Podhradsky told Kotaku. "But they don't do a great job of protecting the user's data."

Podhradsky, along with other researchers at … Read more
