Shapeways gives 3D designers a place to sell

3D designers looking to sell their creations have a new place to do so with Shapeways. The site, which launched in July 2008 as part of Royal Philips Electronics' Lifestyle Incubator formerly acted only as a virtual 3D printing service. Designers could use the service to print out a single design, or a large batch without leaving their house.

Now the service does the dirty work of packaging and shipping out what it creates to people who buy designed items. 3D designers simply put together which items they want in their shop, set the prices, then direct potential purchasers there. … Read more

Nvidia takes on stereo 3D with GeForce 3D Vision

We mentioned AMD and iZ3D's stereoscopic 3D approach earlier, and now we get to take a look at Nvidia's solution with the announcement of its GeForce 3D Vision. Unlike AMD, which is merely a beneficiary of iZ3D offering ATI Radeon customers a deal on drivers for its specialized 3D LCDs, Nvidia's stereo 3D hardware is homegrown, and it's also one of the few products that Nvidia itself is distributing to retail.

iZ3D shows-off 3D LCD lineup, gives ATI gamers a deal

iz3D, makers of 3D-capable LCDs, is showing off a few prototypes of its technology on the CES show floor. This news is actually from the end of December, so we're playing a bit of catch-up, but as you'll find out throughout the show, stereoscopic PC gaming may finally gain some traction this year.

Specifically to iZ3D, according to a news release, it will have three prototypes on display. From the release (PDF):

NBA to air All-Star events in 3D theaters

The NBA is teaming up with Turner Sports and Cinedigm Digital Cinema to broadcast live in 3D its All-Star Saturday Night events to 80 movie theaters across the U.S. on February 14.

The Live 3D event will be shown on up to 160 screens in 35 states across the country. Pricing for the tickets hasn't been set yet, but a representative from Cinedigm, the technology company behind the event, told the Los Angeles Times that tickets will likely sell for between $18 and $22 a pop.

Steam meets snow in an atmospheric screensaver especially appealing to lovers of trains and clocks. Watch from multiple angles as a throwback steam train chugs by pines on a snow-blanketed mountain pass. The vista overlooking a desolate valley is a treat, though there only appears to be one. A few more miles of varied scenery would improve the screensaver's visual interest. NFL demos live 3D broadcasts

If you thought that watching football in high definition seemed more realistic, just wait until you can view a game in 3D.

Next week the National Football League is broadcasting live in 3D a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders to theaters in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston. The event, to be held December 4, is a demonstration to show how the technology can be used to provide a more realistic experience in a theater or in the home.
