LG claims world's greenest LCD

If eco-friendly features replace the endless stream of thinnest, smallest, and lightest "in the world" claims on the technology market, we'll be very happy campers. And for that reason alone it's worth mentioning the latest boast from LG about its new computer monitor.

The Korean company says its "Flatron W2252TE" is "the world's most energy-efficient monitor," according to our cousins across the pond at SmartPlanet. The 22-inch widescreen LCD, which is headed for the U.K. market, supposedly uses 40 fewer watts to operate than do comparable monitors--an energy saving of … Read more

Swarovski tarts up a new HDTV

We've already seen the Crystallized Loewe Individual and the ultra-bling Philips Diamond TV, and now it's LG's turn to join forces with the Swarovski empire with its Canvas Crystal X HDTV. A pretty clever one, too, which weds last year's Design Art-series chassis with 1,000 of the glittery crystals. It would have been even better if the company had extended this special treatment to its Scarlet lineup, though we have had equal reservations on the level of unnecessary extravagance.

Whatever it is, this 47-incher is already out in South Korea and costs a dear $3,194Read more

LG introduces 3 new phones for Verizon

LG just dropped some heavy cell phone news this morning with the announcement of three new handsets for Verizon Wireless. The most intriguing of the lot is the LG Dare, a phone that will join the ranks of the LG Vu, the Samsung Instinct, and the Apple iPhone as a full-fledged touch-screen handset. The one difference seems to be that the Dare has a stylus, with "advanced handwriting recognition" plus a virtual QWERTY keyboard (EDIT: Verizon says the Dare does not have a stylus, which makes the "advanced handwriting recognition" statement a little confusing). It will … Read more

Supreme Court grants victory to Quanta in patent case

The U.S. Supreme Court handed a big victory to Quanta Computer on Monday when it held that the doctrine of patent exhaustion barred LG Electronics' claims against it.

In doing so, the Supreme Court reversed the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit's previous decision that patent exhaustion did not apply to method claims and extended that doctrine to licenses for products that "substantially embod[y] a patent." This case is likely to substantially change the playing field for patentees seeking to monetize their patents in a vertical industry value chain.… Read more

Photos: LG's 'Scarlet,' the TV with a hole

LG's "Scarlet" range of televisions are causing quite a buzz. Is it the massive marketing campaign? Is it the intrusive red color that the back of the TV is finished in? Could it in fact be the glowing red/white hole on the front of the TV? Whatever it is, people want to know about this TV, so we got LG to send us one, and we've taken some photos of it.

We're looking at the 32-inch model, so it's only a 720p TV, which is fine for most uses, and we suspect that … Read more

What's for dinner? Ask the oven

Every Sunday, before I go grocery shopping, I gather my family around the table and ask, "What do you want for dinner this week?" And every Sunday, right after I ask, everyone is suddenly extremely busy counting the tiles in the kitchen backsplash. Which is why I often find myself staring at that same backsplash come 5 p.m., wondering what the heck to feed my brood tonight.

If only my oven could tell me what to make!

That's what one of the latest kitchen offerings from LG attempts to do. The new single and double built-in … Read more

LG stretches new monitors to the limit

No, your screen doesn't need adjusting. This photo you see here depicts LG's new 38-inch "stretched" LCD monitor.

It's one of two elongated models, the other being 29 inches, for situations where extra-wide displays are needed, such as commercial signage. That must be why its resolution--1,366 x 480--is relatively low, as it's probably not ideal for close-up reading.

The company says these monitors, which are destined for the U.K. market, work equally well either vertically or horizontally. Just keep your distance.

LG Decoy to debut June 16

LG will purportedly launch the LG Decoy on June 16, which is just in time for the hands-free calling laws effective in July. This is because the LG Decoy comes with a stowaway Bluetooth headset that can be removed when you need it, and placed back when you don't. So far we know that it'll have a 2.0-megapixel camera, video and MP3 playback, and a microSD card slot. It will be available from Verizon for $179 with a two-year contract, $249 with a one-year contract, and $349 in full retail. We look forward to getting a review … Read more

LG microwave is big on function

I have four small kids, so when we plan a large dinner with friends, I do as much cooking as possible ahead of time. But I also live in Houston, so running the oven at 170 degrees to keep the food warm until we sit down to eat doesn't exactly thrill me. I've tried microwaving cooked food, but it delays the start of the meal, because each item has to be placed inside and heated. When I cram in several dishes at once, the turntable sputters, and I end up with spills all over everything.

LG's new … Read more
