J.D. Power confuses again with another award

Every so often (we can't discern a regular pattern), J.D. Power and Associates hands out awards to wireless carriers. Though we don't doubt that J.D. Power's methodology is thorough and careful, we do have a hard time keeping track of them all. There are awards for customer care, call quality, retail sales satisfaction, and overall customer satisfaction. And within each award, there can be multiple categories and individual winners in each region of the country.

This time around, T-Mobile has taken the customer care prize with an index score of 755 points on a 1,… Read more

Moto's green phone

Everyone talks about being green these days, but the gadget world is one area where green may seem like an impossibility. Yet Motorola and T-Mobile are doing their best to change that perception with the new Motorola Renew W233.

Introduced at CES 2009 as the world's first carbon-neutral cell phone, the Renew is made entirely of recycled water bottles (at least the plastic parts) and it comes in packaging made from 100 percent recycled material. Moto is also promising that with an estimated talk time of nine hours, the Renew will use less energy.

Though the idea of a … Read more

Firmware update coming to T-Mobile G1 owners

Updated Feb. 4, 12:13 p.m., PT: This post has been updated with more details about the fixes and new features included in the RC33 firmware update.

On Tuesday, T-Mobile announced that it will start rolling out maintenance release (1.1 RC33) to T-Mobile G1 customers this week. The update will be delivered over the air and should reach all owners within the next two weeks, the carrier said.

Unfortunately, what it didn't reveal are the exact details of what's included in the release, simply stating that it would provide "new features and software updates." … Read more

Nokia 7510 reviewed

It's been a good few weeks in CNET cell phone land. Just weeks after CES, two new handsets that debuted at the show actually went on sale. First we had the Motorola Tundra and now we have the Nokia 7510.

Since it usually takes months for CES handsets to actually hit sores (if they do it all) we relish the rare times that we have to wait just a few days for a full review. T-Mobile announced the 7510 the same day it announced its new RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 and T-Mobile Shadow. The 7510 is a chunky flip … Read more

T-Mobile confirms more Android, 3G devices in 2009

We've heard rumors of the T-Mobile G2, but we're always weary of such speculation until we get the official word from the carriers or cell phone manufacturer. However, the likelihood of a T-Mobile G1 successor is high and now, it's all but just been about confirmed by T-Mobile.

In an interview with Fierce Wireless, Neville Ray, T-Mobile's senior VP of engineering, revealed that the carrier is planning to release more 3G-capable smartphones and Google Android devices in 2009. "As the year progresses there will be a significant number of HSPA-capable smartphones. We will be launching … Read more

T-Mobile USA faces stiff competition

Correction, 4:03 p.m. PST: This story misstated the day the company announced subscriber figures. It was Thursday.

Competition is heating up in the wireless market and it looks like T-Mobile USA is getting singed.

Deutsche Telekom, which owns the wireless company T-Mobile International and T-Mobile USA, reported earnings on Thursday citing slower subscriber growth for its U.S. wireless entity.

During the fourth quarter, T-Mobile USA, which is the fourth largest wireless operator in the U.S., added 621,000 new customers. This was down from the previous quarter when the company added 670,000 new subscribers. And … Read more

T-Mobile's Nokia 7510 goes on sale

It's a busy day for T-Mobile. In addition to announcing the availability of the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 and the new T-Mobile Shadow, the carrier also started shipping another CES phone, the Nokia 7510.

Though T-Mobile isn't using the "Supernova" label as part of the 7510's name, the phone offers everything we saw in Las Vegas. Its most prominent design features are the replaceable front covers in brown, red, and espresso and the hidden external display that flashes nifty animation intermittently.

Features include a 2-megapixel camera, a music and video player, support for T-Mobile myFaves, … Read more

T-Mobile's RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 review

T-Mobile teased us at CES 2009 by introducing the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 but denying us any details on its availability date and pricing. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait too long as the carrier released the final details on Tuesday night.

The BlackBerry Curve 8900 is available now to business customers and will be available to everyone else on February 11 with a price tag of $199 with a two-year contract. It replaces the BlackBerry Curve 8300 series, and brings several notable improvements, including a sleeker design, a faster processor, a full HTML Web browser, and a 3.… Read more

T-Mobile Shadow: Hands-on impressions and photo gallery

In addition to the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900, T-Mobile also announced the retail availability of the T-Mobile Shadow on Tuesday night. The Windows Mobile 6.1 device was first announced at CES 2009 as the replacement to the original Shadow and can now be purchased online and at T-Mobile stores for $149.99 with a two-year contract.

I have the T-Mobile Shadow in hand, but I only received it a few hours ago, so I'm still checking out the smartphone and putting through its paces. I'll have a full review for you tomorrow morning, but for now, I … Read more

All T-Mobile retail stores to carry G1

When the T-Mobile G1 first went on sale back in October, the only way you could get the device in stores was if you lived in one of the carrier's 3G markets. Sure, you could have purchased one online, but there was no way to actually go in and check out the goods before buying. Now that's all about to change.

Starting on Saturday, January 24, T-Mobile will offer the Google Android smartphone at all of its retail stores and eligible retail partner locations nationwide, whether you live in a 3G market or not. Currently, the T-Mobile G1 … Read more
