Review: LG Chocolate 3

Based on all the previously released LG Chocolate handsets in the U.S., there appear to be three defining characteristics of a Chocolate phone--it has touch-sensitive controls, it has a slider design, and it has a scroll wheel not unlike the iPod.

Well, the LG Chocolate 3 only has one out of the three characteristics, making us wonder if it even truly deserves the Chocolate branding (it doesn't even look anything like its namesake). Indeed, the LG Chocolate 3 has no touch-sensitive controls at all and is the first Chocolate handset to be in a flip form factor.

LG Chocolate 3 will be offically released July 13

It turns out that we were slightly off when we said the LG Chocolate 3 would be out on July 14. Verizon just announced today that the Chocolate flip phone will actually hit the retail shelves a full day early on July 13 (In Verizon retail stores, Circuit City, as well as the online store). The LG Chocolate 3 will also be the marquee music phone for Verizon's new V Cast Music with Rhapsody deal. Indeed, with a 3.5mm headset jack, stereo Bluetooth, stereo speakers, and a built-in FM transmitter, Verizon hopes for the Chocolate 3 to be … Read more

Okay, okay, I'll get an iPhone 3G!

My very first meaningful blog post here (after an introduction), from June 23, 2007, was titled "Why I'm not getting an iPhone".

Let me review my reasons at the time:

The original iPhone couldn't really do any more for me than my Palm Treo 650. The iPhone couldn't be used to connect my laptop to the Internet. No voice-memo support. No 3G networking. Not enough storage capacity. No native apps from third-party developers. No high-res screen.

Okay, what's changed?

Well, the iPhone 3G still… Read more

iPhone wannabes or smart alternatives? You decide

CORRECTION July 9 at 10:48 a.m. PDT: This article misstated the BlackBerry Bold's display type. It does not have a touch screen. The story has been updated to reflect this change.

Apple's iPhone 3G hits store shelves on Friday, but if you haven't been struck with iPhone fever, don't fret. There are plenty of alternatives that offer similar style and features. And they may even be easier on your wallet in the long run.

To some Apple fans, phones such as the Samsung Instinct or the HTC Diamond are simply iPhone wannabes. But to … Read more

Microwave and oven, all in one

Sure, microwaves are much faster than your conventional oven. However, there are some drawbacks. The two appliances just cook food differently. LG has a solution, though: the Light Wave microwave. This unit combines microwave and conventional oven technologies to get an amazingly high quality microwave oven.

The Light Wave guarantees a speedy dinner: it cooks food at much higher temperatures and can cook meals up to three times faster. It's a countertop appliance that can heat food to more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit in less than five minutes. The Light Wave uses LG's Mega Heater System: light waves … Read more

LG's new iPod dock sees red

If home electronics with built-in ambient lighting is a gimmick as some suggest, it's nevertheless a profitable one. We're just not sure about the reasoning behind using it with an iPod dock.

Philips has charged a premium for its TVs with this feature, which supposedly improves viewing. That doesn't help music, of course, but that hasn't stopped LG from incorporating red ambient lighting with its PC12DAB "iDoc."

Sporting an unusual oval design, the dock also has a CD player, DAB radio, alarm clock, and speakers with 10 watts of sound, according to Tech Digest. … Read more

Keep tabs on the laundry from afar

It's possible you've seen all the washers and dryers my colleagues have posted about recently and not one of them has cried out to you and made you feel you must rush out to buy it.

Maybe you thought to yourself, "Those are all fine, but I need a washer that can tell me when it's finished, even if I'm in a different part of the house." Maybe you just can't decide if you want to stack your machines or store them side by side. Or maybe you wanted a system that would … Read more

LG to release the Chocolate 3 on July 14

PhoneArena has reported that LG and Verizon will introduce the third version of the coveted candy-name music phone, dubbed the LG Chocolate 3, on July 14. The VX8560 model will be the first ever Chocolate clamshell, available in both black and light blue (Though we bet there will be additional colors in the future). Some of the expected features include a microSD card slot, a 1GB of internal memory (which sounds quite impressive), a 3.5mm headset jack, a 2-megapixel camera, stereo speakers, stereo Bluetooth, and an integrated FM transmitter. The full retail price is expected to be $299, though … Read more
