Facebook hires former Apple design manager

Facebook has grabbed its latest managerial hire from the ranks of Apple.

Chris Weeldreyer, a former user interface design manager for Apple, is now a product design manager for the popular social network. Weeldreyer joined Apple in 2003 before leaving the company this past February, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Facebook had been looking to fill the design manager slot with the right person to lead a team of designers.

The job has been advertised as primarly a management role. But the company also needed someone who could do hands-on design work.

Get better file management on Android with Solid Explorer

Android design has come a long way -- and evidently so has at least one file explorer app. Solid Explorer is a fully featured file management app with menu organization that makes sense paired with a classy user interface.

Generally when you open a file explorer you'll just see a directory listing, a few feature buttons, and maybe even a search box to look for specific files. Solid Explorer puts apps like these to shame with its arsenal of features.

Dual-panel browsing is the next step for Android file browsers and Solid Explorer knows it. Why would … Read more

Plan your activities with Almejandro's Daily Planner

We expect planners to be easy to use; they're supposed to make our lives easier by helping us keep track of events and appointments in a straightforward way. Almejandro's Daily Planner takes a more complicated approach to this task. It's not the most intuitive program we've ever used, but it does offer some interesting features in addition to the basic datebook functions.

We had to spend some time looking at the planner's interface before figuring out how to proceed. There's a monthly calendar and a list of daily tasks, which made sense. There was … Read more

Getting started with to-do list app Any.Do

Any.Do for iOS is like a less colorful version of Clear, but with three important differences: it's free, it supports voice commands, and it integrates with other apps on your iPhone.

When you first launch Any.Do, you will need to create an account using an e-mail address or you can log in via Facebook. Any.Do is also available as a Chrome extension, and your account is synced with any device you have running the app or extension.

When held in portrait mode, you can view by either date or folder. Swipe up from the bottom of … Read more

Waste less time online with a Chrome extension

I read once that Jonathan Franzen writes his novels using an old laptop because it does not have a wireless antenna. He also took the extra precaution of gluing an Ethernet jack into the Ethernet port and then clipping the cable so that there was no way -- wired or wirelessly -- he could access the Internet while writing.

Knowing Franzen needed to take such measures to stay focused made me feel a little better about myself and my time-wasting ways on the Internet. If you need some assistance staying on point (and off Facebook) during the workday, WasteNoTime could … Read more

Organize your books with Alfa Ebooks Manager

If you have a large collection of books -- either electronic or hard copies -- it makes sense to organize them so that you can easily find what you're looking for. Alfa Ebooks Manager is a comprehensive database program with plenty of features for maintaining your library. Unfortunately, some of the more-interesting features are limited to the paid version of the program, while others simply don't seem to work.

At first glance, we were impressed with Alfa Ebooks Manager; it comes with several sample books already entered into the database, and renderings of their covers were displayed on … Read more

Facebook bulks up admin access with new privilege levels

Facebook is giving page administrators more muscle in deciding how things get done on their pages.

The social network has introduced five different levels of admin privileges, allowing companies to assign specific duties and permissions to individuals without giving everyone all the keys to the page.

A Facebook help center page published today describes the new roles of manager, content creator, moderator, advertiser, and insights analyst:

These updates are geared toward businesses, so that more than one person can work on social media but a primary administrator can still be in charge of who is doing what. Before now, companies … Read more

CallApp adds informative contact management to Android

Remembering all the details about a contact can be difficult if you're speaking with many people across many companies. To combat this issue, CallApp for Android will provide a wall of information about each person you're contacting.

You might be wondering: why do I need another app when I can add notes to contact profiles on my phone? Well, that little text box is definitely handy, but it simply doesn't compete with CallApp's features.

CallApp will let you see publicly available social media and other related information for individuals and businesses. For individuals this is helpful … Read more

Boost your downloads

Just as in previous versions, Download Accelerator Plus 10 (free) boosts your download speeds by breaking files into smaller pieces, connecting to and downloading from multiple sources simultaneously, and even seeking out faster mirrors. What's different with this newest version, though, is the more streamlined engine that now offers features in the form of "add-ons." This means you can supplement your boosted download speeds (200 to 400 percent faster in many cases) with only the additional features that you want.

One of the most useful add-ons that you can enable in version 10 is DAPsters. If you … Read more
