Lenovo breaks ground on $800M mobile devices facility

Continuing its push into the mobile devices market, Chinese PC maker Lenovo broke ground Monday on a new base in the central Chinese city of Wuhan that will focus on research, production and sales of mobile devices.

Lenovo, which in late 2011 became the world's second-largest PC maker, issued a statement that the 5 billion yuan ($800 million) facility could eventually house as many as 10,000 employees and will focus on smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices for Chinese and global markets. The facility is expected to begin operating in October 2013.

PC market limps along -- and that's better than expected

Despite a weak economy and constraints in hard-disk supplies, PC shipments scored a gain of 2.3 percent last quarter compared with a year ago, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker.

Though nothing to brag about, the results surpassed the firm's February forecast of a drop of almost 1 percent.

IDC had anticipated a down quarter due to the sluggish economy, competition from mobile devices, and uncertainty about the impact of Windows 8.

The limited supply of hard-disk drives had some bearing on the industry but not as much as anticipated. Supplies have been constrained since last … Read more

Lenovo IdeaPad S2109 gets a video unveiling

Last week, Lenovo took to YouTube to unveil its first ICS-based tablet. The new tablet sports a 9.7-inch, IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and an iPad 2-matching resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. This obviously falls short of the new iPad's 2,048x1,536-pixel resolution and even most Android tablets, which usually top out at 1,280x800 pixels.

The S2109 includes Micro-USB, a microSD card slot, and a single 1.3-megapixel front camera. However, say what you will about its unibody design, 8.9mm thickness, or its purported 10-hour battery life; the most intriguing detail has to be its inclusion of quad speakers on the back.

All tablets include speakers -- usually one or two -- but by featuring four, Lenovo is kind of raising my expectations of what I should expect from the tablet's audio capabilities.… Read more

Well this week, Microsoft told everyone not to expect a new Xbox anytime soon, which means I won a point! It also means that Sharon and Emily are in a fight.

Get a Lenovo IdeaPad A1 Android tablet for $189

This is an update of a deal I wrote about a couple months ago.

New iPad, new schmi-Pad. If you're looking for bang for the buck in the tablet department, and don't care about things like pixel overkill and 4G, the deal to beat remains the Lenovo IdeaPad A1. It's the little tablet that could--by which I mean it could prove more than adequate for the majority of users.

For a limited time, Lenovo is offering the black IdeaPad A1 tablet for $189 shipped. (To get that price, apply coupon code FOURDAYDEAL315 at checkout.) That's not … Read more

Recall: Lenovo calls back two ThinkCentre models on fire risk

You can read Lenovo's recall information page for all the details of the recall. A tool on the page lets you plug in your machine code and serial number to find out if you have an affected unit. The M90z is a different unit than the M91z we reviewed in October 2011.

Lenovo markets the ThinkCentre line to business customers, although it is available for anyone to purchase. Lenovo says it sold the at-risk systems between May 2010 and January 2012.

If you are at risk for a flaming all-in-one, Lenovo advises you to immediately unplug your desktop. Once … Read more

One-third of U.S. adults will own a tablet by 2016, says report

Tablet fever will grip more than a third of all U.S. adults by 2016, according to Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.
