Apple feels no need to offer lower cost iPhone, says analyst

Apple seems to have no desire to sell cheaper smartphones, according to a report from Citigroup technology analyst Richard Gardner.

Meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer yesterday, Citigroup analysts discussed a variety of topics with the two executives, notably the smartphone market.

Asked about the sustainability of Apple's average selling prices and margins for the iPhone, Oppenheimer suggested that the company will keep focusing on producing "great products," believing that customers are willing to pay more for them.

"We did not get the impression that Apple feels a burning need … Read more

Apple dealt legal setbacks by Motorola in Germany

It looks like constant patent litigation is taking its toll on Apple, which was dealt a pair of setbacks in Germany today.

Apple temporarily removed older iPhones from its online store in Germany due to a previous legal victory won by Motorola Mobility, according to legal blog Foss Patents. Slashgear later reported that Apple was granted a temporary halt on the ban.

Separately, the site also reported that a German court granted Motorola's request to permanently ban Apple's push e-mail services, a key feature of its iCloud offering.

So apparently Google's decision to cough up $12.5 … Read more

Motorola sues Apple over iPhone 4S, iCloud

In the seemingly endless Apple-Motorola legal slugfest, Motorola has just taken a few new swings at its rival--possibly at the behest of its would-be acquirer, Google.

A new Motorola lawsuit, filed yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida and spotted by patent blogger Florian Mueller, claims Apple is infringing on six of the company's patents with two of its latest product offerings: the iPhone 4S and iCloud.

In the suit--Motorola's second against Apple in this particular court--the company makes the case that Apple has infringed and continues to infringe on those … Read more

Apple's Cook: iCloud more than mere product

Apple CEO Tim Cook says that iCloud is the company’s “strategy for the next decade.” It remains to be seen whether Apple can win the cloud wars.

Speaking on Apple's fiscal first-quarter conference call, Cook talked about iCloud. He noted that iCloud had 85 million customers signed up and said:

The response from customers has been incredible. It solves a lot of problems that customers were having and made their lives much easier. And so I see it as a fundamental shift, recognizing that people had numerous devices, and they wanted the bulk of their content in the … Read more

How to prevent iTunes Match from exceeding your iPad cell-data limits

Apple's iTunes Match service is running up cell-data charges for some unsuspecting iPad users.

For $25 a year, iTunes Match stores your iTunes library on Apple's iCloud servers and makes them available on any PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and other iOS devices. CNET blogger Lance Whitney describes the iTunes Match service in a December 28, 2011, post; Apple provides an iTunes Match FAQ.

When I signed up for the iTunes Match service, it took several hours to upload via a cable-modem connection about 5,500 MP3s that were stored in the iTunes Library on a Windows … Read more

Apple dominates Google's Zeitgeist 2011

Google's annual Zeitgeist roundup of the hottest trends in search from 2011 is out, and when it comes to tech, Apple dominates the list.

In Google's top 10 list of fastest-rising technology searches for the United States, the top six are all Apple-related, led by "iCloud," "Osx Lion" and "Ipad 2." "Steve Jobs" also makes the list at No. 8.

Google fared a little better on its own overall global top 10 list, with "Google+" snagging the No. 2 spot. In a major milestone in the history of collective global humiliation, the top search slot for 2011 goes to "Rebecca Black." Apple also occupies three places on the overall list, with "iPhone 5" at No. 6; "Steve Jobs" at No. 9; and "iPad 2" at No. 10.… Read more

Storage talk of 2011: Apple takes control

Though not a storage vendor, Apple had arguably the biggest influence on consumer-grade storage products during 2011.

And just like the way the company has always been trying to control its products, this influence didn't always turn out to be a good thing for consumers, including Apple fans. Let's take a look at a few major examples of how Apple changed the face of computer storage in 2011.

1. The lack of support for USB 3.0

USB 3.0 was first introduced in late 2008, and by late 2010, most new and high-end Windows computers were equipped … Read more

New phishing attacks target iCloud, MobileMe users

As the holidays quickly approach and our agendas become filled with baking cookies, traveling, and last-second shopping, scammers are on the loose and have started targeting iCloud users in an attempt to acquire your log-in credentials.

These technolojerks (yes, that's going to be a thing) stoop pretty low to try and pry sensitive information from their prey. In the latest incarnation, phishers are claiming to be Apple, suggesting to users that if they do not respond promptly their iCloud (or MobileMe) account could be terminated.

Thankfully, the brain trust scammers aren't the most grammatically sound (at least not … Read more
