HP surprisingly emerges as No. 2 tablet maker

At least for now, Hewlett-Packard can lay claim as the second most-popular tablet manufacturer behind Apple.

Too bad, it'll be a short-lived reign.

Despite all of the attention focused on Apple's iPad, other tablet makers have seen some adoption this year. In total, the U.S. tablet market--excluding Apple--saw sales of more than 1.2 million units and retail revenue of $415 million from January through October, according to a new study from NPD. HP stood on top of that non-iPad hill, closely followed by Samsung Electronics.

Of course, the market is still tiny when compared with Apple, … Read more

Samsung's redesigned Galaxy Tab hopes to get around injunction

Samsung Electronics is relaunching a modified Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany it hopes will get around an injunction won by Apple against the original product.

The new product, called Galaxy Tab 10.1n, was first reported on by German news site MobiFlip, and highlighted by Foss Patents. The biggest superficial change is a metal band that extends around the device and bleeds into the front. It's unclear whether other parts were modified.

Samsung's change and insistence that it get around the ban marks the latest development in the ongoing legal saga between it and Apple. Apple won … Read more

Amazon's Kindle Fire: The Android tablet developers love most

Amazon's Kindle Fire has managed to do what many other Android tablets have failed to do: drum up interest from developers in North America.

Among developers surveyed by Appcelerator and IDC, 49 percent said they considered the Kindle Fire their primary target. It narrowly beat Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab, which garnered 48 percent of the vote. Pocketgamer reported on the survey results. The rival Nook Color from Barnes & Noble only garnered 24 percent of the vote.

The Kindle Fire has managed to captivate the consumer electronics industry with its $200 price point, significantly undercutting other tablets. The lower … Read more

Will Kindle Fire kill the $500 tablet?

Will Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire reset the tablet market, rendering the $500 tablet obsolete?

Let me preempt any challenges from Apple iPad folks. Yeah, I know, Apple will continue to sell the iPad at $499, $599, and $699. And, yes, Apple is slated to ship more than 12 million iPad 2s in the current quarter. Android rivals like Motorola's Xoom or Toshiba's Thrive aren't even close.

With that out of the way, the most immediate impact will be on the pricey Android guys. "I think [the Kindle Fire] resets the bar," Carter Nicholas, CEO of market researcher eDataSource told CNET this week.

To expand on Nicholas' argument, why buy a $500 Xoom if you can get most of what you need from a $199 Fire or a $199 Samsung Galaxy Tab? Or a $249 Nook Tablet? Or a 10-inch Lenovo IdeaPad for $349.99? … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus review: The best 7-inch Honeycomb tablet?

As more tablets are released, manufacturers need to continually come up with good reasons for consumers to buy their latest device. Whether they do this through price, features, or a unique design, with a $200 tablet like the Kindle Fire out there, tablets will need a hook to keep consumers interested.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus' hook is Peel, an app that turns the tablet into a pretty robust smart remote control for your TV.

It may not sound like much, but for those whose tablets remain permanently attached to their coffee tables anyway, well, you might as well get some use out of your device, beyond it distracting you from the plot intricacies of the latest episode of "Basketball Wives."

Check out the full review to see if a remote control that thinks it's smarter than you is enough to earn the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus the "best 7-inch Honeycomb tablet" title.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus now available at Amazon

Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus has hit U.S. shores ahead of schedule, at least among some of the larger retailers.

Amazon is now selling the new 16 gigabyte 7-inch Tab with a note that the tablet is in stock and available with the usual one-day shipping option.

But when Samsung announced the new Tab 7.0 Plus at the end of September, it said the tablet wouldn't reach U.S. consumers until November 13.

A Samsung spokeswoman told CNET that the new tablet is now available with larger retailers that have already received the product, … Read more

GameStop now selling Android tablets for gamers

GameStop is now in the Android tablet business.

The retail gaming vendor is starting to sell three Android tablets outfitted and accessorized as gaming devices.

GameStop is offering gamers a choice among the 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100 for $329, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for $499, and the $399 Asus Eee Pad Transformer. To transform them into gaming machines, the retailer is bundling six titles with each tablet--Dead Space, Monster Madness, Sonic CD, Cordy, Riptide GP, and Re-Load.

To further cement the deal, the company is including the Kongregate Arcade Android app, which gives gamers an online portal with access to more than 500 free games, the ability to compete against others, and a place where they can share reviews and comments about different titles with fellow users.… Read more

Samsung: Galaxy Tab injunction 'flawed'

Samsung Electronics today alleged that the interlocutory injunction awarded to Apple against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was incorrect and a leap of logic, all the while pushing for the case to be expedited in the courts.

In a case presented before Justice Lindsay Foster in the Federal Court of New South Wales today, Samsung contested the basis on which Justice Annabel Bennett gave her ruling two weeks ago.

Samsung complained on multiple grounds. In Bennett's ruling, she said that Samsung's "unwillingness" to move the case to an early final hearing stage counted against the … Read more
