Ferrari's media system takes second lap

Whether it's binoculars or Segways, Ferrari is a company that knows marketing. So to generate more interest in the Meridian F80 portable media system debuted earlier this year, it is relying on a standard branding practice: introducing new colors.

In addition to the lacquer finishes shown before--we were particularly fond of the yellow--Ferrari is introducing two special editions: The "Rubino Micallizzato" (red) and the "Grigio Silverstone" (graphite). They'll have the same features, according to Newlaunches, including a CD/DVD player, digital radio and 80-watt speakers. And don't worry, the price hasn't changed … Read more

Ferrari prances with its FXX Evoluzione

While you may someday own a Ferrari (though a Ferrari Segway or Ferrari Acer laptop is more likely), I can guarantee that you will never own this car.

You see, the Ferrari FXX Evoluzione, the latest car in the company's elite invitation-only amateur racing program, is not meant to be owned. Admission to this party--rumored to be $2.5 million--only gets you the right to drive the car on Ferrari-supervised tracks.

You also have to be willing to provide extensive feedback in a debriefing session with the Italian automaker. (Though I'm guessing this last condition isn't too … Read more

Segway's Ferrari edition (that's right)

Despite a recent push by human chickens, the Segway still hasn't become the ubiquitous mode of personal transportation that some once envisioned. And somehow it seems that acquiring Ferrari's nameplate won't bring it that much closer to reality.

Yet the racing legend has done just that, which makes us wonder if there's anything it won't put its name on. But hey, more power to them if they can get people to pay $12,000 for a "Segway PT i2 Ferrari Limited Edition," especially because there's apparently no performance advantage over the original (… Read more

Acer rolls out another Ferrari laptop

Apparently, and somewhat to our surprise, people are actually buying laptops that bear the nameplates of Italian sportscars--at least those with the Ferrari emblem. There must be some reason that Acer keeps coming up with new models, anyway.

According to the company's German Web site, Acer is introducing the Ferrari 1100 as the latest member of its Ferrari laptop family. The ultralight carbon-fiber laptop has a 12.1-inch screen, AMD Turion dual-core processor, hard drive up to 250GB, Dolby sound system and DVD burner. Laptoping says it even has a fingerprint reader for heightened security.

Ferrari: New trend in stretch limos?

In the world of the uber-rich, of course, competition knows no bounds. So we should expect nothing less of the market for Ferrari stretch limousines.

It may not have the kind of gullwing doors sported by one of its chief competitors featured last week, but this six-passenger model from Philadelphia-based Ali Baba Limousine isn't exactly a Mini Cooper either. It's also a relative bargain to rent, at $400 an hour.

Photos: Frankfurt speed kings

Automakers used the 2007 Frankfurt auto show to launch a set of hot new cars and updates. These aren't all supercars, but they are all superfast. Exotics are displayed by Ferrari and Lamborghini, while Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, and Audi represent Germany. And there's a significant British contingent from Bentley and McLaren. These are the cars you dream about.

World's first gullwing Ferrari limo

Decades ago, seeing a Ferrari on the street was as common as spotting a Blue-Footed Booby in Golden Gate Park. That's hardly the case anymore, in this Age of Wretched Excess. But it's still possible to make a statement with the storied automobile--namely, in the form of a stretch limo.

The vehicle pictured here is no prom-night special--it's the world's first gullwing Ferrari limo," according to organizers of the annual European Limousine and Chauffeur Show in England this month. Gizmag says the black Ferrari 360 Modena is also the fastest limo in the world, which … Read more

The Ferrari of high-end speakers

Ezra Dyer's Ferrari F430 road test in the July 1 "Automobiles" section of the Sunday New York Times had me drooling. The lucky bastard didn't just get to tool around in the dream machine, there was something about the way he gushed about the 479 horsepower V-8's "high-pitched, hard edged wail that's unlike anything else you'll hear from a car with license plates," and later on rhapsodized about the car's ability to deliver a "supersonic whip crack from the exhaust that prompts you to look in the mirror to … Read more

Knitted Ferrari really moves the needle

We hear a lot of Ferrari-related yarns here at Crave--the story of the cardboard FXX Millechili being one of our recent favorites. But here's one that really made us sheepish: a full-size Ferrari made entirely from wool.

British art student Lauren Porter has devoted nearly a year of her life to making a full-size replica of the car, which looks like a cross between a Testarossa and a 355. According to Tech Digest, Porter enlisted the help of 20 family members and friends to achieve the feat, although she welded the car's steel frame together herself.

You too can own a pair of Ferraris

There was a time when some of us at Crave frequented equestrian events (i.e., played the ponies) and spent far too much money on binoculars, let alone ill-advised trifecta bets at Santa Anita. Since then, technology and overseas manufacturing have drastically reduced the price of sporting lenses, and quality binoculars can be gotten today for a relative song.

But this is one pair that we might be worth stretching the budget for. The "Ferrari Visio" binoculars from William Optics have 8x magnification but, more importantly, are themselves a sight to behold. Gizmag says they also include Ferrari'… Read more
