Windows Phone 7 home-brew hole to be plugged

The team behind ChevronWP7, an application that was released last November as a way for users to install applications without going through Microsoft's Marketplace application or signing up for a paid developer account, says that Microsoft has fixed the "error" that had allowed the hack, and will be rolling out that fix as part of the upcoming Windows Phone 7 software update.

ChevronWP7 was available for user download for just a few days before being taken down by its three-man development team. Brandon Watson, director of developer Eexperience for Windows Phone 7, had gotten in touch with … Read more

HTML editing, extra spicy

Taco HTML Edit is a Mac-only HTML and PHP editor, a good compromise between free editors and more-powerful (and expensive) Web development apps.

Taco HTML Edit's main window provides a relatively spare, streamlined hand-coding environment, with a toolbar that lets you save, print, find, batch find, preview, live preview, and insert special characters from a drop-down menu. You can also access Taco HTML Edit's Component Library from here, a relatively new addition to the program that gives you quick access to 22 ready-to-plug-in, cross-browser-tested components--everything from an image carousel to a scrolling, fixed-height table. These components vary in … Read more

Mobile industry group wants new privacy rules

A trade group for the mobile-phone industry is calling for new privacy guidelines to help address consumer complaints over how and what information is gathered through mobile apps.

Made up of mobile advertisers, publishers, and media companies, the Mobile Marketing Association said yesterday that it's working on a new set of privacy guidelines to supplement its current Global Code of Conduct. Created in 2008, the Code of Conduct established that mobile marketers must ensure that consumers can opt in and out of ads and that information gathered through ads be used responsibly.

But with ongoing concerns about online privacy, … Read more

Scannable PetHub ID tags give Rover a URL

In case a name and phone number on Fido's dog tag aren't enough to bring him home from his wanderings, a new tag from online pet community PetHub includes a Fido-centric URL that is scannable by smartphone.

One side of the laser-etched tag displays a human-readable Web link to information on your pet. The other shows a two-dimensional QR bar code that can be scanned by any iPhone or Android phone with the free code-scanning software NeoReader installed.

When scanned, the code automatically navigates a browser to PetHub to display an animal's information.

By default, PetHub shows … Read more

The fast lane of Web design

Freeway Pro is a Web site design and maintenance tool that offers professional-level features without requiring any coding knowledge.

Freeway's Mac-style, multipane interface should feel familiar to users of other design programs, with its simple toolbar, a list of your site's pages in a pane on the left (including master pages), a main window showing the current selected page, and numerous floating palettes for formatting and settings. Less experienced Web designers will find a lot to like here, including Freeway's customizable templates, WYSIWYG and drag-and-drop editing, and the way the app handles everything code-related in the background, … Read more

The 404 652: Where we see you driving around town with the girl I love (podcast)

You know you have a hit single when Jeff gets off his antiboogie butt and dances to it; such is the case with Cee-lo Green's latest single from an upcoming album titled "The LadyKiller."

The song title described by the Washington Post as a "two-word, Anglo-Saxon, hortatory phrase whose first word is typically rendered by dashes or a string of nonsense characters from the upper levels of a keyboard," rhymes with "Cluck You" and has already racked up over 2 million YouTube hits since its release earlier this week.

The up-tempo beat is … Read more

Pro-level text editing

BBEdit is a popular, powerful HTML and text editor with a high-performance array of tools for editing, sorting, searching, transforming, and otherwise manipulating text. Anyone with modest text-editing needs should check out BBEdit's free sister app, TextWrangler, but BBEdit is still an excellent choice for software developers (especially Web developers), with potent hand-coding features across more than 20 programming languages.

On top of basics like code folding and syntax coloring, BBEdit has flexible, multilanguage code completion, nonmodal search and replace across multiple files (so you can keep multiple document and search windows open), a smart Scratchpad that automaintains its … Read more

Bar code paintings that scan life

Bar codes that look like paintings? Or paintings that look like bar codes? Either way, these have to be the prettiest bar codes, bar none. Peeping out from within the geometric lines are slice-of-life depictions of Boston artist's wanderings through South America. Now, if only the bar codes on TV and PC carton boxes had more symmetry and color than just boring black lines. You can catch more of Blackerby's bar code series here. Meanwhile, here are two of my favorites:

Marc Maiffret--the quick rise of a teen hacker (Q&A)

For Marc Maiffret, the turning point in his life came when--at the age of 17--he woke up to an FBI agent pointing a gun at his head.

A runaway and high school dropout, he had just returned home and landed his first professional job using his computer skills for the good of companies instead of for mischief. But his past was still catching up to his present.

Young, articulate, and outspoken, Maiffret went on to become a celebrity hacker wunderkind, testifying before Congress on security issues, featured in cover stories in numerous magazines and newspapers, appearing in MTV's "… Read more
