Otterbox shipping Defender Series case for new iPad

Most people don't want a bulky case for their new iPad, but some folks are looking for some serious protection. While there are plenty of tough cases for the iPhone 4S, the selection is more limiting for the iPad, and Otterbox remains among the top choices in rugged iPad cases with its Defender Series case.

The company has made some tiny tweaks to the design of the Defender (the new case fits both the iPad 2 and iPad third-generation). You get three layers of protection, including a built-in screen cover, and the Defender's outer "shield stand" … Read more

Nothing to sneeze at: Paper napkin iPhone cases

One can find an Apple iPhone case made from just about anything. From bamboo to leather to rubber to plastic, the world's manufacturing materials are very well-represented in options for your iDevice covers.

A case material that may not jump out as an obvious choice is being utilized by a company out of Thailand to sell its iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S cases on Etsy. That material is a paper napkin.

It may be what you've scribbled your offer to purchase a multibillion-dollar company on and slid across a lunch counter table, but it's also being turned … Read more

Dodocase launches new iPad 3 cases

Dodocase has updated its popular journal-style cases, modifying the milled bamboo interior tray to accommodate the slight change in depth for the new iPad. The company has also expanded the line, and now has three new models to choose from.

For an extra fee ($9.95), you can also personalize your case with an inscription. Adding a hole for the iPad's back camera will set you back another $4.95.

We've been fans of previous models of this case and should note that while it doesn't fold into a stand like some folio-style cases, you can fold the cover back and put the case in "easel mode" to prop up your iPad for video watching.… Read more

How cutting edge geolocation can change everything

AUSTIN, Texas--These days, smartphones seem like they're everywhere. And with their wide array of built-in sensors, those devices--iPhone, Androids, Windows Phones, and others--can provide us with more and more data about where we are and what's around us than ever before.

And yet, the devices sometimes still seem like they're caught in a very 1.0 era--they can tell us where we are, but that information may not be useful in any way beyond helping us get to where we're going.

But what if your iPhone could automatically give you your shopping list when you arrive … Read more

Speck tweaking existing iPad 2 cases to fit new iPad

Speck already has a solid lineup of iPad 2 cases, so it's no shocker that it's simply making some tiny tweaks to that line to make the cases fit the new iPad.

The company is hustling to get out new versions of the PixelSkin HD Wrap, MagFolio, and WanderFolio. Some new colors are on tap, including Grape and Pomodoro for the PixelSkin HD, Mulberry for the MagFolio, and Black Peacock for the WanderFolio.

Prices range from $49.95 to $69.95. … Read more

Targus already shipping iPad 3 cases

After leaks in the past, Apple has been very careful about what information it doles out to accessory makers in advance of new product launches. It's unclear how much info Targus got from Apple (or some other source), but we can tell you an hour after the new iPad officially went live, we received some new case samples from Targus in packaging that was labeled "for iPad 3rd Generation."

That's a safe, generic way to describe Apple's third iPad, but since Apple is simply calling the new iPad the "new iPad" it leads … Read more

Wine bag knows how to rack

Wine and good times go hand in hand, but where else can wine go?

The pairing of food with wine can be as simple or as complicated as need be. Sticking to the old rule of thumb that says to serve red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat is usually a pretty safe bet, but there is a third factor to consider and that would be the company; wine always tastes better when shared among friends.

What could be better than good friends and a bottle of wine? Good friends and six bottles of wine, of … Read more

Accessory makers planning for similarly sized iPad 3

In preparation for Wednesday's launch of Apple's next-generation iPad, CNET's been contacted by a few accessory manufacturers gearing up to release "new" products that will work with the iPad 3--or whatever it's called.

Those quotation marks around "new" are there because it appears that while all the new accessories announced out of the gate will be billed as iPad 3 accessories, they'll also work just fine with the iPad 2.

Three different company reps said they expected the next iPad to be similarly sized and that there would be only minor changes to the thickness of the device. While no one was 100 percent certain of that (one rep said, "We've been told there will be some minor changes in the thickness, but we don't have any specifics.") these companies have enough confidence in their belief--and perhaps their sources--to stick with the iPad 2 as a stand-in for the next iPad. … Read more

3D-print your own Raspberry Pi case at home

If you're one of the lucky thousands who snagged a $35 Raspberry Pi pocket Linux system before the first run of 10,000 sold out in just a few minutes, there's almost certainly one question on your mind--where am I going to put this thing?

The Raspberry Pi is a full system with all the needed ports that's about the size of a credit card. It's definitely cheap, but it's not exactly pretty. That's likely because its nonprofit designers are mainly focused on their mission of getting the systems into the hands of kids across the developed and developing world to get them excited about programming.

Fortunately, another emerging technology makes it easy to put some clothes on that tiny naked system.… Read more
