The dominance of Apple and Google mobile browsers is leading to a situation that's even worse for Web programming than the former dominance of Internet Explorer, a standards group leader warned today.
Daniel Glazman, co-chairman of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) group overseeing the formatting and effects standard called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), said that programmers are overlooking other browsers when they use newer CSS features--even when those other browsers support the features.
The result is that those other browsers--Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera, chiefly--might have to essentially masquerade themselves as other browsers. When that happens, the "… Read more
The wireless carriers may not agree on much, but enough of them rallied to support the Federal Communications Commission's power to hold spectrum auctions the way it sees fit.
Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, C-Spire Wireless, Leap Wireless, NorthwestCell, Bluegrass Cellular, Atlantic Tele-Network, and the competitive carrier trade group RCA sent a joint letter to 20 senators and representatives calling for the removal of language the House's jobs bill that would strip away a small, but crucial, bit of power from the FCC.
Notably, AT&T and Verizon didn't participate in the letter. AT&T CEO Randall … Read more
Green Car Journal dubbed the Ford C-MAX Energi winner of the 2012 Green Car Vision Award yesterday at the Washington Auto Show. This is the second consecutive year Ford has won top honors; the Ford Focus Electric garnered the award last year.
The Ford C-MAX Energi, which will be available in late 2012, is built on the same global C-car platform as the Ford Focus and future Ford models, the automaker said.
The C-MAX Energi bested four other finalists, including the BMW i3, the Cadillac ELR, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell, and the Tesla Model S.

Want a piece of U.S. presidential history?
Well, a cool $1 million will get you this 2005 Chrysler 300C, once owned by President Barack Obama. The vehicle has been put up for auction by an anonymous owner, who has chosen to sell it through a respected eBay broker, referred to in the eBay description merely as "Lisa."
The 5.7-liter V8-powered luxury sedan was owned by the president when he was a senator. The 300C only has 20,800 miles on its odometer.
According to eBay, a deposit of U.S. $2,000 is due within 24 … Read more
On Wednesday, President Obama is due to visit an Intel plant in Arizona. Here's why.
Obama aims to highlight manufacturing in America--one of the State of the Union's themes--and it's hard to find a better example of that than the world's leading chipmaker. Intel is now one of America's foremost manufacturers, boasting some of the most sophisticated manufacturing facilities in the world, many of them sprinkled throughout the U.S.
It's the kind of announcement one expects to hear at CES, not a week or two after. Sony has updated part of its Vaio laptop line with new CPUs and new colors. But don't get too excited, these minor upgrades say nothing about any possible future systems meeting Intel's ultrabook spec, or using the next generation of Core i-series CPUs, expected around midyear.
Green Car Journal announced five finalists for the publication's annual Green Car Vision Award. The award recognizes innovations in fuel efficiency, low emissions, alternative fuels, or electric power.
To be considered for the Green Car Vision Award, vehicles must be in demonstration on public highways today or nearing commercialization but not yet widely available to consumers, Green Car Journal said in a press release.
The 2012 Green Car Vision Award winner will be announced at … Read more
Google is tapping Santa Clara, Calif.-based Marvell to power its new TV, which will debut next week at CES.
Marvell's ARMADA 1500 HD Media System-on-a-Chip (SoC) has been designed into the next generation of Google TVs debuting at CES 2012, the chip supplier said Thursday. That chip is based on a design from U.K.-based ARM.
"Marvell and Google have teamed up to...[transform] the TV into the command center for our connected lifestyle," Marvell co-founder Weili Dai said in a statement.
The two companies have collaborated on software and chip technologies to grow the … Read more
