Intel has slashed solid-state drive prices, but probably not enough to sway many consumers.

Intel's mainstream, and currently most widely available, 80GB X18-M was cut to $390 from $595--about a 34 percent drop in price. But paying almost $400 for an 80GB drive may still be too much to ask of consumers when, for example, a 160GB, 7,200-rpm laptop hard-disk drive from Toshiba can be had for less than $100 on Amazon.

Solid-state drives, particularly the newest generation of SSDs, typically offer much better performance than hard-disk drives.

Hitachi on Wednesday joined the crowd of green-storage vendors with its fourth generation of the CinemaStar hard-drive family.

The new drive features Hitachi's EcoTrac Classification. This means it's halogen-free and has very low power consumption. The new CinemaStar features a read/write power specification of 1.4W--a reduction of 22 percent compared to previous models.

Other that that, this is a 2.5-inch (laptop) SATA hard drive that has the spinning speed of 5,400 rpm, which is popular though slower than the 7,200 rpm of some higher-end drives.

For the reasonably low price of $249.95 this April, Panasonic will be offering up a 12.1-megapixel ultracompact camera with a 5x f3.3-5.9 29-145mm-equivalent lens, a large, 3.0-inch LCD that automatically adjusts to lighting conditions, and optical image stabilization.

Dubbed the Lumix DMC-FS25, it's the top-of-the-line camera in the company's slim-and-stylish FS series. The camera, which will be available in gold, silver, and black, is loaded up with Panasonic's Intelligent Auto (iA) features including autofocus tracking, exposure, ISO, and scene selection control, and face detection (but sadly not the new face recognition system).… Read more

After 25 years on the market, it's a good question, since someone with no knowledge of computers looking at, say, today's MacBook Pro, would not necessarily know that it evolved from 1984's original 128K Mac.

But evolve it did, and on the 25th anniversary of the release of that original machine (which is this Saturday), one might indeed wonder what hereditary DNA, if any, today's Macs retain from their much more humble ancestors.
