When Samsung launched the Android-based Galaxy Camera, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before it made a smartphone with a zoom lens. And it was.
Part smartphone, but mostly camera, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is aimed at those who really don't want to carry a second device, but really want a zoom lens (a 10x f3.1-6.3 24-240mm one, to be specific) and don't mind bulging pockets to get it.
But, does having a "real zoom lens" make it better than its fixed focal length lens competition? Well, to answer … Read more
With its bulky point-and-shoot camera shape and 10x optical zoom, Samsung's Galaxy S4 Zoom makes for a ridiculously shaped smartphone that defies pocketability. But the mashup device sure can shoot.
In fact, its image quality is on par with a good point-and-shoot camera, and its optical zoom makes it a more flexible camera than any other smartphone's. Unfortunately, the Zoom's awkward and uneasy design disrupts the phone's day-to-day functionality on a fundamental level, even if you're not holding it up to your ear.
Despite its strong photography skills, the Zoom -- which has no U.… Read more
Apple's embattled "pinch-to-zoom" patent has apparently been tossed out by federal patent authorities, if a new report is correct.
Samsung Electronics on Sunday filed a petition in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, requesting that all alleged infringement against Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent -- Patent No. 7,844,915 -- be tossed out, according to Macworld, which obtained a copy of the documents. Samsung cited a recent decision on the part of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to reject all 21 claims in the patent through … Read more
While both strive for smartphone imaging prowess, these two devices are really very different. It's best to think of the Lumia 1020 as a smartphone with a good camera, and of the S4 Zoom as a point-and-shoot that can make calls.
In addition, each camera phone has different lenses, resolutions, and focal lengths that makes the photo comparison a little trickier. The following assessment combines my experience with that of CNET camera editor Joshua Goldman, who … Read more
Right Zoom for Mac addresses the annoying problem of the Mac's green zoom window button. Rather than simply maximizing the window to fit the screen, users still must click the lower right corner and drag the window larger. This application changes the default button functions, making it a true maximize feature.
The freeware program works in the background to change the default functions. After downloading quickly, the program brings up a preferences menu. This allows for Right Zoom for Mac to be activated at all times, or when an additional hot key is pressed. There are a number of … Read more
HoverZoom Safari Extension for Mac lets you easily zoom in on photos and profile pictures on your favorite social networks by simply hovering over them. If you are tired of constantly clicking on thumbnails and find the process for enlarging photos on social networks cumbersome, then you'll appreciate this extension.
The application operates as a Safari extension and installs well into the browser. After reloading any open Web pages, HoverZoom Safari Extension for Mac starts to work in the background on its own. The overall preferences menu contains several options. These include changing how the extension zooms in, whether … Read more
In just two short months we've seen the debut of five Samsung Galaxy S4 phones: the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S4 Active, the Galaxy S4 Google Edition, the Galaxy S4 Mini, and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. There are already rumors of a sixth, the 6.3-inch Galaxy S4 Mega.
Making matters more confusing is that the phone specs vary, and some Galaxy S4 phones may offer an experience that's quite different from the original top-rated S4's. From my perspective, Samsung is simply muddying its S4 brand name with too many Galaxy S4s.
When I think of … Read more
As users wait for Apple's new iOS 7 to come out of beta, developers are learning all of the ins-and-outs that the upcoming operating system will have to offer. The use of camera zoom controls while recording video is the latest feature said to be discovered.
According to iDownloadBlog, users will reportedly be able to zoom in and out by using the pinch gesture while shooting video. Most likely, there will also be a zoom slider at the bottom of the screen -- like when using the camera in iOS 6. Apparently, users will also supposedly be able to … Read more
