Walmart will convert your discs to digital from your home

Walmart will soon be able to convert your DVD movies to online digital content right from your own PC.

The company's Disc-to-Digital service already handles that type of conversion. But the current process requires you to hop over to your local Walmart store to get your DVD converted.

Starting sometime this month, the expanded service will handle the whole conversion with you driving it from your PC. Using its Vudu video streaming service, Walmart will convert your DVD and Blu-ray movies and TV shows into UltraViolet digital copies. Those copies are then stored in your own online libraries where … Read more

Walmart selling $50 iTunes gift card for $40

Holiday shoppers looking for a gift for their favorite Apple fan can save $10 on an iTunes gift card via Walmart.

The retail company is now offering a $50 electronic iTunes gift card for $40. That seems to be the only deal since Walmart is selling all other iTunes gift cards at their regular prices.

Buyers who opt for the deal receive an initial confirmation e-mail from Walmart and then a second e-mail with access to a PIN. After receiving the PIN, you can then send the card as a gift to your recipient. The turnaround seems to vary, however. … Read more

Walmart selling iPhone 5 for $127 in stores, 4S for $47

Walmart is apparently quite eager to get shoppers in its doors and is now selling the iPhone 5 for $72 less than Apple's retail price.

The retailer today said it would be selling the iPhone 5 for $127 with a new 2-year contract, or to customers who are eligible for an upgrade through their carrier. Walmart also dropped the price of last year's iPhone 4S down to $47 from its previous $87.97 price tag, which also requires a carrier contract.

9to5Mac, which reported on the price changes earlier today, notes that the third-generation iPad (a generation behind … Read more

Your first glimpse of Walmart shoppers fighting over phones

You might have decided to have a few extra hours in bed this morning. The English call that a lie-in.

Or you might have laid out overnight in the hope of buying a cheap gadget or two that will change the quality of your life.

But nothing describes more clearly the strength of the human condition than a little footage of predatory mall action.

I therefore got up especially early to try and scour the Web and trace a little video from, say, a Walmart.

So here, in all its splendor, is the sight of hundreds of people purportedly fighting … Read more

How Walmart is going all out with mobile

TUSCON, Ariz.-- Here's the takeaway from a panel called, "Shopping Outside the Box: The Intersection of Data and Dollars," that took place at the Techonomy conference: For all retailers -- that means brick-and-mortar giants -- it's all about the data.

"Data is the weapon," said Dan Schulman, the Group President of Enterprise Growth at American Express.

And, increasingly, that data is coming from mobile devices. The challenges facing brick-and-mortar stores are only growing as online shopping moves from the desktop to smartphones. People look up prices online while they're inside a store. … Read more

Smash that iPad: Pastime at Kentucky Wal-Mart

You never know who's serving your food in a restaurant and what they might have done to it, in it, or on it.

It's the same with electronics shopping. You can't be sure whether what's inside the box has been scratched, ill-made, or merely smashed by someone having fun in the stockroom.

What should one make, therefore, of the film posted to Reddit by SenorPierre?… Read more

Can Groupon grow up?

Every weekday afternoon, CNET Update delivers the top tech stories of the day. The show keeps a close eye on emerging trends, hot devices and new apps. And it's all in less than three minutes.

In today's show, we speculate on Spotify, shop online with cash, and crack open a beer to look mature:

It seems the controversial cyber security bill CISPA (short for Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) is on shaky ground. The White House threatened to veto the bill, saying it endangers the privacy of Americans and gives Homeland Security too much power.
